I'm going to be re-gearing my truck soon and just want a little feedback on what gears y'all are using or what you would recommend.
It's an '87 v10 Suburban with a 700r4, 10 bolts front and rear. Currently it has 3.73s which were fine with the wee little 235/75-15 tires that came on the truck and it was tolerable with the 31x10.5s also. Now that I have 33x12.5s it is completely unacceptable, I can't stand driving it the way it is. I haven't been driving it much the last couple years but now that I'm using the truck more often again enough is enough, time for new gears.
Doing the math, a set of 4.27s will basically put it back to how it was stock, but I've been thinking of 4.56s instead. I do a decent amount of towing (not a shitload, but enough that I am taking it into consideration), and that 350tbi isn't exactly a powerhouse to begin with so a little extra torque would be appreciated. My only concern is that I do drive on the highway a lot, and I've never been one for obeying speed limits- I'd say 80-85 is my average cruising speed. I don't know if the 4.56s will be too short, I don't want to be driving around at like 4500rpm for extended periods of time. I'm aware they make gears much shorter than that and even 4.56s aren't ideal for towing with 33s, but I have a few friends that can't reasonably go more than like 70 on the highway with their trucks and I just want to make sure I won't end up in that boat. I feel like they're only a little shorter than what should be on there so it won't be a problem at all, but I barely remember what driving this thing felt like with the baby tires on it so I have no clue how my RPMs would compare.
Long story short, to anyone else with 33s and a 700r4, what gears are you running and how are they working out for you?
