I am fixing to chnange the Oil sending unit on my 86 pickup. Looking at the 2 plugs on the unit they look to be the same size. Since they are the same size I don't have to worry about polarity?

Why are you changing th OP switch? That truck should either have 2, 1 for the gauge/light. 1 for the choke. Or a single 3 wire switch. If you have a switch with 2 terminals that is for the choke and not polarity sensitive, but will not cure a gauge or light issue.
