Obligatory New Guy Post

Hello,

New guy here. I have 3 headaches very enjoyable hobby projects, all in different stages of disrepair restoration. They double as my daily drivers. Though, they each have their individual responsibilities outside of that.

I love these trucks, I -ing hate these trucks. I feel like I'll fit in well. My current project is swapping the interior on my Suburban, its too blue and too old and gross and has to go. What a headache it is to even find a part name, and color matching HA! Who'da thunk some of the most popular and iconic vehicles of all time could have such limited aftermarket industry standards. Ugh, Google's awful search functions make it much worse than it has to be. I've given up and joined the forum in desperation that there is a horse with a mouth somewhere around here. That or I'll get barked at and berated by salty forum boomers. TBD. My Suburban is my main focus. I need to turn it into an overlander (immediately)sooner than later, due to unfortunate circumstances.

So far its been all miss in terms of my needs. Sourcing anything for these suburbans has been difficult. Shopping for a vehicle model 88-91 whose design technically stopped in 87 makes it such a dream.

Part of the joy in any antique restoration project is the treasure hunt process for finding those "unobtanium" parts. I own two of the '88-'91 Burbs, both 4WD, both dark blue interiors. It is sometimes frustrating to not be able to get parts readily from the after-market suppliers. In their defense, they are a business, and don't want to expend time and capital to research, source, and produce and market items that are not in the mainstream market. 1989-1991 Suburbans fit into this category of low production number vehicles, compared to 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickups. My 1991 is just loaded with the new features (some 'new' items were already being used on the '88-x GMT-400 series of trucks) that GM was introducing on the new 1992 Suburban, such as:

1. New electric adjustable side mirrors. This also changed the wiring harness, fuse box, and interior and exterior door panels.
2. New overhead console. This also changed the wiring harness, fuse box, and headliner and roof panel structure with its required mounting hardware.
3. New radio. This also changed the wiring harness, and the entire dash assembly, getting rid of the traditional 2 shaft radio concept, and introduced the DIN system of electronic component mounting. The dash bezel also changed, but these had enough of their own changes, when the "Check Engine" warning light came about with all the emissions crap was added.
4. New ECM/PCM modules added, which really was a game changer for the different functions they took over.
5. New rear (barn) door glass defrost. This also changed the wiring harness, and the lower dash assembly.

I think the old 70's TV show Kung Fu had the best advice for a restorer of antique vehicles: 'Patience, Grasshopper, Patience'
