I suspected that might be an issue. I'd imagine RTV Silicone will work fine there. It's not under any pressure. I wasn't aware of the snap ring though. I'll pay attention to that when I do mine.
I was told the kits make a difference if they are aluminum case or iron case. Maybe that's the difference. Or maybe the difference is just the tailshaft/adapter.

Did your kit come in a box similar to the one I have pictured a few posts ago?

Cracks me up, people say these transmissions are weak. I just noticed Dodge used them in 77-81 Trucks with 400 and 440cu in engines. Same rebuild kit for all the Chevy's and Dodges. That's probably why the rear gasket doesn't fit.

I noticed on Drivetrain.com, that the same Kit # is the same for all models of the A883, including the Dodge OD units. Do keep in mind, the OD A833's are different from the Non OD units. I know the side covers are even different. And the Kit ends in WS for With Synchros

That looks like it'll do the job. All you're really needing to do is go straight up with the mounting where the 2wd plate has an offset pushing the shifter more toward to the firewall, probably to center it in the hump, where the 4wd is back further toward the seat to match the Tcase stick.

So how are you guys doing with your NP440/A833's @tsailer2 and @Ferdwerd.

You guys need to come back and join in on the fun too. Find a few minutes for us at least from time to time. :waytogo:

BTW, I did indeed find other info that this transmission had also been renamed NP440. In short, pretty much to designate a GM unit from a Chrysler unit, but it is still the NP833. Also some good rebuild info and tips here too.
This might be the link tsailer2 was looking for.

Im here Im here. Sorry I actually decided to rebuild the engine due to something seizing up (I thought it was possibly internal in the engine, when I pulled the engine and dropped tranny, it turned over fine. I think it had to do with the pilot bushing??? Anyways I now have a 388 freshly built instead of the 350. And when I first rebuilt the tranny I only had 2 gears, 2 and overdrive, I pulled it apart and found an issue with a key replaced and now have all gears. One thing I notice is the 2nd gear is closer to my seat than the overdrive. like there is more travel. I am still in process of the rebuild. I need to find a power steering bracket (the one I had wont clear headers) as well as an alternator bracket (aluminum heads, I want a water pump mount bracket) oil pressure adapters for the block, (the old one I dont know how they got it in the block it has very short thread and I cant get it to thread in) and a plug for the cylinder head (we only have an oreilly's and they do not carry but a 3/8 and 1/4, I need a 5/16ths i think? I have a few pictures of my engine... I will upload in a bit.

Tailshaft removal

Is it possible to get to the rear snap ring to remove the tailshaft housing without dropping the trans?

I have a spun speed gear...

Normally no snap ring is required to come off to get the tailshaft housing off the main case. IIRC, the snap is just to hold the bearing or output shaft in the transmission. So you should be able to remove the tailshaft houseing then slide the driven gear off the shaft and slide a new one on. Driveshaft removed of course.
