Decided to finally fix the transfer case tailhousing leak on my K30 today. Upon removing the housing itself, 3 pieces of what appears to be a snap ring fell to the ground. While trying to figure out where it came from, I noticed that there seems to be some front-to-back play when I push/pull on the output shaft... is that normal or is this “snap ring” some type of retainer? The output shaft bearing looked to be in good shape. Since I had the rear drive shaft off, I balanced, replaced the 2 U joints on she shaft, sanded it and painted it. I also scraped a nice thick layer of sludge off of the transfer case skid plate, sanded it and painted it in the same wrinkle black color.

If you know what this part is or where it goes, please let me know!

It does look like the snap ring for the bearing. Here is an old manual for a 205..

Definitely the snap ring for the rear bearing. I would get a new one, that one looks slightly distorted.

Also that play is normal until you tighten up the yoke!

It appears as though the snap ring goes into the grove in the attached picture. I need to pick up a micrometer so I know exactlyhow wide of a ring I need; there are several widths offered. Should my truck have come with a slip yoke? Most videos/diagrams appear to have a fixed yoke on the output shaft.

Is there any chance this is a speedometer gear retaining snap ring? As you can see in the photo in my last post, the snap ring that retains the bearing is still on the shaft. When the pieces are assembled correctly, the inside diameter is approximately 3.228 inches and the ring is approximately .129" wide if that helps.

Thanks,
Eric

The snap ring you're missing, goes around the outside perimeter of the bearing. You can see the groove on the outside of the bearing for the snap ring, this snap ring keeps the bearing from moving.

It's a standard part to replace on a rebuild.

Fixed yoke is stronger, but you have another CV joint to take care of. If you're running long travel suspension, it critical. But you would need a longer travel slip joint on the driveshaft to really make it viable.

The truck is stock height and I have no plans to change that. I went ahead and ordered 2 of the snap rings in the event I break one during install. The delay prompted me to buy a polyurethaning trans/t-case mount since that too looked to be worn well beyond its service life. Thank you to everyone for your help.
