The NP203 Has 5 locations for the shifter, Starting in the position closest to the seat it should be:
4 High Lock
4 High
Neutral
4 Low
4 Low Lock.
The tail housing is aluminuim but the rest of the case is Cast.

The NP205 has 4 shifter locations. Starting from the position closest to the seat it should be:
4 High
2 High
Neutral
4 Low
The 205 is easilly recognizable by its Heavy cast iron case, There is also a small circular plate the bolts to the rear of the case Aprox. 2-2.5" in diameter, It will have 3 Bolts that hold it to the case. The shifter handle on the 205 is just round.

The shifters are Different aswell, The 205 has a center pivot bolt in which the shifter pivots on.
The 203 has 3-4 linkage rods, and the shifter itself is actually a side rail shifter style. usually the handle is like flit iron that tapers back down to a round shaft for the nob It is also usually chrome plated.

Like so many I took the shifter apart to clean all the dirt and grim only to find out I didn't remember the order to put it back together. Does anyone have or know of a place to get a diagram of how the parts go back together.

Thanks tearing my hair out.

Just spent about a half hour looking for anything that could help but all I find is threads about people in the same predicament as you. Also found a reference to another thread here at GMSB where someone else is in the same boat as you. May want to consider twin-sticking it if you haven't already.

Look anythingk like this ????

Shifter has two levers and two linkage rods going to two arms on the T_case. also, note the rear output aluminum extended housing.

There's alot of confusing info your all posting. one says

4hl
4h
n
4l
4ll

And then
ll
l
n
h
hl

Mile Marker after conversion says:
4x4 Low
2x4 low
Neutral
2x4 High (Normal Street use)
4x4 High

I can't even shift my tcase but up 1 n down 1. Guess I need to readjust the linkage.

adjustment procedure is to shift the lever in neutral, put a round pin in the hole in the shifter brackets that are under the floor . then you can make sure the lever on the transfer case are in the middle position on both levers(neutral) of course taking off the linkages to do that.adjust the linkage to fit both levers and shifters brackets.reattach and you should be in the middle of the travel of the levers.if you don't have full travel of the shift lever ,look to see if it is hitting the metal of the shifter hole in the trans tunnel of the floor board.

I checked it, parts I have don't match the pics.

J shaped threaded rod from tcase, shifter bracket with cotter pin that connects to a block that slides on the threaded rod. I was able to raise it up a bit and gained a shift point. xx n and to the left. that's really all that's there to adjust maybe if there was more threaded rod It would shift all the way up.

Yep, tcase has 8 and 6 bolts, with the fill plug in the center and is cast. PO might have had bad 203 shifters, and had 208s sitting around.
