Hey guys I’m Andrew new to the group I’ve got a 77 c20 she’s a pretty clean truck for what she is all original and in pretty straight shape it’s a 292 3 speed looking to build up a small block with a t400 behind it but considering doing the ls swap, any input??? Eventually I want to fully restore the truck but keep it simple and keep it a sleeper. Looking forward to see what all you guys have done!

LS every time. IMHO.
Easy to find, reasonable, LS swap parts and electronics are readily available.
Same money or less depending upon your application.
Oil consumption, gas mileage, and power advantages over old school 350/383 motors.
Resale value is no comparison to LS converts if done well.

Overdrive is a MUST, no 3speeds. 4L80e if you can, 4L60e if you must.
Built a 7.4L with a (built)700r4 in mine, wouldn’t spend my money that way again.

Welcome. I'd probably do the LS swap since you're in California. Even though the '77 3/4 ton would have minimal emissions, legally you'd probably still have to run a smog pump and a few other things. The '77 K5 I had in the early 90's had a 400 with HD emissions and had a pump.
