Hello, I'm new to the forum and have aquired an '88 3/4ton burb that I'm inthe process of setting up as my hunting and fishing rig. It is an incredibly clean unit that suffers from typical 30 year old ailments, all minor.

My current goals, other than cosmetic issues are; heads (typical valve guide issues), suspension/lift (2-1/2" - 3"), taller narrow tires, and the fabrication of a roof rack. I will not hotrod or beat the unit, just want to improve the characteristics that are important to me. i.e. clearance between body and drive axles (to facilitate better deep snow performance) as well as provide adequate clearance for a taller (34" -35") narrow tire and chains. I am also wanting to upgrade to a 700R4 transmission as well as switch to a higher capacity fuel tank.

Any tips or advice from those of you who've already traveled these same roads would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy!

With taller tires, having overdrive will be just about useless without steeper gearing. Most Burbs were optioned with the 40 gallon tank and as far as I know, there are currently no larger tanks available.

Welcome! I'll throw in my 2 cents since I have a 3" lift and love playing in the snow with chains.

I have Tuff Country HD front springs, no front sway bar, and a 3" block on the back on my K20. I run 285/75R16 tires (about 33" tall). Looks like a lot of room until you twist it up (which you may or may not do). When a front tire is stuffed there isn't much room anymore. Example:

It doesn't rub, it just gets close. So if you want to run a 34"-35" tire it will be even closer and would probably rub. Then add a set of chains, then they take up even more room. And depends on your chains. Regular ones, V-bar? Studded Trygg ones like I have...

Also might want to check out getting a locker/trutrac differential in the rear. It helps a lot. I
