Does the '81 SM465 have a synchro 2nd gear? I have to come to a complete stop to get into 2nd. 1st, I understand, but 2nd as well?

You shouldn't have to make a complete stop, just a slow roll.

Does it grind, or just plain won't go into gear?

It just doesn't want to go into gear.

well you are not going to be able to down shift it at 30mph, but they will down shift. when you are down shifting wait until you are under 10mph then try let the clutch out a little. if this doesn't do it give it a little gas at the same time. this is very much a seat of the pants maneuver that you need to get a feel for. it will come with practice and experience. highdesertranger

OK thanks! I'll try that. I've been driving manuals 53 years this summer and this one has my stumped.

These Saginaws do not like being shifted fast. The one in my 87 is the same way. I find double clutching to help tremendously. Wind the tyranny up, the higher the rpm the quicker u can grab the next gear on these. But remember, shift slow.

I had a 86 K20, with a 350 and it would downshift to second at low speeds.
Can't remember the approx. speed but it was slow.
I assume you have the granny 4 speed (L,1,2,3) on the shift knob?

Same as above posters - 1984 C20 w/350 here and from 3rd down to 2nd for me is about 10 to 15 MPH maximum but I do NOT need to be at a complete stop to get it in to 2nd.

I can get into 2nd just before it stops moving. I have not tried the highdesertrange method yet. The last of the brake issues get fixed today. Rubber brake line needed to be shipped in. Remote island life!!!

OK. I have this downshifting thing figured out. I need to match the vehicle speed (10 mph) and the rpms (no tach, just a guess), clutch position and pulling the shifter into 2nd gear.
When I get it all aligned it slips into 2nd and we continue on smooth as silk, well maybe smooth as wool, this '81 has nothing smooth about it! LOL!
Thank you highdesertrange
