FINALLY, after a time-out of a few years due to rebuilding our house, I'm starting to have some extra time left again for my personal hobbies like the Suburban.

I read it but now I can't find it again. All I'm finding now is 160hp but what I read was in 86 it got 25 more hp and torque. I'm not done looking and if I'm wrong in what I posted I WILL admit it.

As from the beginning, Honky Kong Jr., you were absolutely right ! I received the dealer invoice from my 1986 Suburban and it stated clearly 185 hp....Now I only need to find them.....

Hello all,

Personally...

I'm Kurt, I'm 42 years, married and have a great daughter of 13 years and a great son of 10 years.

Although I'm living in Belgium / Europe, I was always passionated by US cars. Mainly due to the fact my father always drove US cars. So during my life, I saw many cars passing by... 1979 Plymouth Volare 4door, 1979 Chevrolet Malbu, 1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1977 GMC Motorhome Eleganza II, 1987 Chevrolet Suburban R10 5.7TBI.

Finally the rebuilding of my house is almost done, so I can find time to start working on my 1986 Suburban. I bought it 2 years ago as a second car to tow my caravan (camping trailer) but did not had many time to spend on it. So many ideas grew, but were not all realised yet.

I do hope to learn a lot from you guys/girls and from this forum and perhaps my posts can contribute to other new members in the future.

My Suburban...

is a 1986 C20 in, what I like very much, 2-tone brown/tan. Some like it, some hate it...
Neverless, for me a square body Suburban always had "something magic". It was US, it was big, it can haul anybody to any place... It was designed in a time when anything was possible.

Although I really like to drive it, it can use some improvements to meet up a little bit about today standards, especially on performance, fuel consumption, comfort items, finishing, ... or just to make it more practical for my personal family use.

Based upon the chassisnumber and RPO codes I found already some basic stuff of my Suburban.
Position 1 Country Build 1 => U.S.
Position 2 Manufacturer G => General Motors
Position 3 Make 8 => Chevy MPV
Position 4 GVWR / Brake system (pounds) G => 8001-9000 Hydraulic
Position 5 Line & Chassis type C => 4x2 Conventional Cab
Position 6 Series 2 => 3/4 Ton
Position 7 Body Style 6 => Suburban
Position 8 Engine Type M => 5.7 - V8 - Gasoline 4BBL
Engine produced in => U.S.
Position 9 Check Digit X => X
Position 10 Model Year G => 1986
Position 11 Plant F => Flint (T&B) - MI
Position 12-17 Production Sequence Number 161694 => 161694

It has the LT9 engine with GVWR of 8600 lb. , THM400 3-speed and rear axle ratio of 4.10 .
But can somebody tell me if my LT9 engine is the 185HP version or the 155HP California version ?

Thank you.

Kurt.

Awesome truck, you have my pitty when it comes to driving that th ing in Belgium with gas prices being triple what they are where I live.

If it were my truck, I would change out the transmission for a 4l80e. It's not too hard to do, and not stupidly expensive (in america at least). That overdrive will make all the difference.

By the way, WELCOME!!!

Thank you all for the reply and warm re-welcome.
To be correct, my first initial post was 4 years ago and right after I bought the Burb.
Meanwhile the paintwork has been polished, the striping and wheels/tires have been replaced which makes a big difference.
But many ideas/plans/improvements/dreams to come.....

Spent three years in the Eifel Mountain area of W. Germany in the mid '80's. Used to drive through Belgium on the way to our favorite campground at Domberg in the Netherlands. Both countries are absolutely beautiful, and the people friendly and welcoming.

Great looking Burb. I just started working on my 1988 Suburban. Let us know if there is any technical help, or parts you might need. Seems like there are always several Burbs in the local wrecking yards.

I love that paint scheme, one of my favorites! I used to have a GMC longbed with the same paint. You've got a good looking truck there, I wish my Suburban looked as good as yours.

I didn't see you the first time around, but welcome back to the site! It's always nice seeing squares in other countries.

Looks exactly like the 84 burb we had except for the rims. Had the roof rack and running boards too.

Welcome back from Texas
