Hi! I'm Steve, living up in Minnesota.

Bought my first truck back in September.
An 85' K10. Love it! Now I need to learn
everything about trucks. :p

I was so excited about this truck I unknowingly
bought a lemon. Now it's time to fix it and make
it awesome. I'm hoping you guys can lend advice!

the truck is leaking oil and is underpowered. those are the two big things. there are other problems like only one gas tank working. but the leak and underpowered engine are my main concern. according to the mechanic it's only firing on 4 cylinders after a compression test.

Howdy! Whereabouts in Minnesota are you, if you don't mind me asking?

So the truck must run really rough then?

Do a full tune up plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, air filter, oil change, new fluids in the diffs and transmission and transfer case, trans filter, and other little things that could use service like pcv, hoses, belts, etc.

Then see how your pickup feels after that if it has the power it's supposed to. As for the oil leaks is it kinda leaking or is the motor just covered in dirty greasy crap? Valve covers, timing cover, oil pan and rear main bearing seals are possible spots for leaks.

A compression test tells you how much pressure is built up in the cylinder and if the pressure leaks down there is wear in the cylinder or piston rings so it would probably burn oil. A spark test will show you if you have spark to each cylinder, it doesn't necesarily mean you're firing, your spark plugs might have something wrong if you have spark at the end of all the plug wires
