Howdy folks! Bought my second square body today and figured I may as well just join the forum since apparently one is not enough.
I picked up my dolled up work truck earlier this year, an ‘85 K30 with an uncommon long frame single cab configuration. It came with an old 8x12 flatbed, muncie 4 speed, 4.10 axles, and what I’m told is a 454 crate motor.
Truth is, the truck just makes me laugh. It’s among the last of the carbureted mechanical dinosaurs and I love it for being exactly what it is-an extremely capable utility vehicle. I also added a small crane with a 2000lb winch to save my back the heavy lifting into and out of the almost 5 foot high bed.
I have a tendency to go overboard with hobbies so not much later I bought a “spare” 454 from a nice running ‘85 C30 TH400 truck. Fast forward a few months to today you’d see me purchase a ‘79 C10 350/350 long bed for $500 without the engine so I had something to put my 454 into. I’ll be bringing it home Thursday after I hopefully sell a garden tractor that will provide the parts budget for the engine swap project.
The frame is solid but the body has some rot so it’ll never be a show truck. My general plan is to build a thrashin’ truck: maximum performance on a shoestring budget. I’ll use what is already there-a working TH350-until it gives in then swap to a TH400. There is talk of NOS. Boost and real performance parts are way out of budget. I just want a fun tire smoking toy that doubles as a work truck.
There’s actually a guy just down the road here (Fairborn) who seems to buy, sell, and part out several square bodies a year. I’ve been meaning to introduce myself since buying the first truck. No better time than now, right?
Photos of the C10 swap project to come. Here’s some of the K30 from the previous owner:
