I now have a new daily. My wife’s grandmother passed last week, and the family has given me her 2002 Toyota RAV4. It’s not the manliest thing I’ve ever driven, but it didn’t cost me a dime and is a whole lot better than the Oldsmobile. It’s a front wheel drive, 4 cylinder auto. And it’s actually impressed me with how much power it has. It has 177k miles, new tires, and was meticulously maintained at the local Toyota dealer. I’m very happy with it. I’m surprised to find that they actually sell brush guards for these things lol.

As for the Oldsmobile, well it’s leaving I hope. Stupid thing decided it didn’t want to start on Friday at the parts store. Turned the key and it didn’t even burp. Finally got it started but I’ve lost faith in it. It’s a 95 eighty eight with 123k miles on it. Brand new cooling system and intake manifold, crank sensor and engine computer put in 2 years ago. Power windows, locks, mirrors and seats. Leather seats also. But no heat and generally unreliable. I plan to put it up for sale after everything is finalized with the rav4. Hoping to get $1000 out of it, or trade for a small 4x4 truck, 4x4 Honda ATV, or maybe a nice 1911.

Nice! Free is always awesome plus you know the history and know it's been babied. That thing should last you a LONG time being a well cared for Toyota. I DD a Saturn so I'll be the last one to give a guy grief over the "manliness" of his DD LOL

Hey, free is free. My daily driver is a clean 03 Chevy Tracker I picked up a few months ago. As far as manliness is concerned, I just avoid eye contact with anyone on the road. Lol

Manliness (spelling? First time using that word.) Just ends up costing you money. We all need a commuter and something practical. If all you do is drive v8's around, your costing yourself money. I am a firm believer in owning multiple vehicles. That way you can still have fun but also be smart about it.

OK, but it's my choice and money what I want to drive, so it's no skin off anybody's ass what that's gonna be. I do own multiple vehicles ,too

Yea that’s a hard lesson learned. I used to daily drive an 06 Silverado z71, 5.3. Then I started driving the Oldsmobile and was shocked at how much gas I was saving. I wish I had never sold my Silverado, but even if I had it back it wouldn’t be my daily anymore.

I agree with the need for a reliable commuter vehicle. I use my '75 GMC truck for heavy hauling and short trips; however, its not cheap on gas and there is always the possibility of a 40 year old part that fails at a bad time.

What amazes me about the newer cars and small SUVs is how smooth and reliable many of them are. If you keep up with reasonable maintenance they are a real workhorse for daily use.

My favorite is the new turbo 4 cylinder engines, since most are tuned to bring torque in real early, which feels very powerful in normal driving. I used to drive Honda's, which had great engines, but they needed RPM to develop power. Some of these new turbos start pulling at about 2k rpm and just get better from there. Ford is using a variation of this theme with their trucks, where the 6 cylinder turbo engines have more power than the older V8's. And these new turbo engines seem to be monitored and controlled so carefully by the computer that the turbo version is just as reliable as a NA engine.

Nice score, the price was right for sure. You pretty much have to make sure most of the fluids are in those things and they keep ticking.

I DD a 2012 Volkwagen Jetta...wagon. I got the windows tinted 5% immediately so as to not be seen in previously mentioned vehicle.
