Let me start by saying my son and I are rookies at this. We are taking on completely rebuilding a 1983 GMC k1500. We have purchased a complete (sorta) wiring harness from American Autowire. It does not include wiring for the power windows or door locks but does indicate it includes a switched 12 volt to use for this application. We need help wiring it all up. We have the double switch for the drivers side and single switch for the passenger side along with the motor pigtail for each side. the motor pigtail has a blue and a dark greyish wire. Which wires on the switches do these connect to? And then what do the remaining wires connect to.

I have tries to attach a picture of the switches and pigtails but it keeps telling me the file is too large.

anyway the wires on the dual switch are black, pink, black w/blue stripe, blue, brown and blue w/white stripe. Single switch is has pink, black w/ blue stripe, tan, blue and blue w/white stripe.

Also, how do the power door locks get wired up?

Thank yall in advance for your help

GM used a screwed up complicated power door lock system in those years. It’s hard to explain, but pushing a button on one side uses the other side to complete the signal path to the relay. Entirely to many wires, too many failure points.

My fix: use a common door lock relay from a later truck/van, and wire it using the later wiring diagram. Since you are starting from scratch, that’s the easiest solution. The later relays switch polarity internally, you use only 3 of the 5 button on each door switch.

I used this method on my 81 GMC, and my son’s 92 Yukon. The door lock relay is cheap if you buy it new, but your nearest junkyard will be filled with them. Lots of GM cars used the relay, make sure you get the matching connector.

This is the relay your looking for, and here is a wiring diagram.
