Need help, what model of 350 do i have?

I have a 1980 chevy k10 with a 350, when i bought it the guy said it was the original engine, checked the casting #'s and it has an 010 block which i understand is very common, it also has the 041 heads which from what ve read were only produced from 68 to 70, the date stamp on the heads is K11 8, when i bought it i was told it was the performance model with 50HP over the base, and was also told it has 12:1 compression... been trying to figure this out for a while and its starting to piss me off, Any help would be much appreciated

I honestly wouldn't worry to much about it unless you have plans for the motor which is a different story.

I can't think of any years where GM offered optional 350 truck engines. The 350 you got depended on the truck model and whether or not it was shipping to California. And none had anywhere near 12:1 compression.

For example, I found these specs for 1980 350 non-California engines:

LS9
Used in C10 and K10 trucks
Net Horsepower: 175 @ 4000 RPM
Net Torque: 275 @ 2400 RPM
8.2:1 compression

LT9
used in C20-30 and K20-30 trucks
Net Horsepower: 165 @ 3800 RPM
Net Torque: 255 @ 2800 RPM
8.3:1 compression


One internal difference between the two is intake valve diameter -- smaller on the 20-30 series engines.

It's not HP so much as TQ that's important when hauling heavy loads. Which makes it really weird that the CK20-30 engine made less peak TQ and had to rev higher to do it. Then again, maybe its TQ curve was as flat as Kansas compared to the C10/K10 engine.

I wouldn't believe a thing that guy said if he's spewing garbage about 12:1 compression. What kinda fuel would that require ?

Not sure if it was the case back when these trucks were built but over 8500 lb trucks today have a different procedure for horse power testing. Under 8500 uses a transient sweep to measure max horsepower. Over 8500 uses a steady state test. Steady state test will show a lower hp due to the fact that intake and exhaust losses are more of a factor.

Cam 2 and some octane boost additive or aviation fuel. I looked everywhere in my 1979 owners manual and didn't see that anywhere as a recommended fuel either.


Seriously that isn't the factory motor with those numbers. If he is going to fudge that then I wouldn't believe a whole lot of what he says. There are a lot of guys out there that can blow up an onion sack unfortunately.

No I was referring to the guy who sold it to the OP with the e few exaggerations!

The OP is cool! just not the less than honest previous owner. Don't worry I have learned the hard way more than once, too!

ah yes I reread and I made a mistake. it's cool. anyhow I agree that the guy that told him 12.1 is a jerk. highdesertranger
