Need help please

Please help. I bought a 86 in decent condition. Fired right up and I drove it home. After sitting for a few days a drive it again and it was making a dragging noise. I thought it was the spare tire chain hanging but nothing was dragging. I parked it for about another week . Tonight I got in it to pull it forward and it felt like it didn’t want to go . Almost as if the parking brake was on. Sure enough it was. Disengaged it and still didn’t want to go. Will go in reverse. It feels as if it wants to but almost like a tire block is holding it back

I'm not familiar with the 86, but sounds like rear drums are locking up. Have heard of this before.

Yeah, you need to replace your shoes, new hardware kit, a few cans of Brakleen from Walmart to clean the dust away, and have your drums turned if they’re still within spec thickness which you need a caliper tool to measure. Make sure you take plenty of detailed pics of how the hardware’s set up so you don’t freak out during the reassembly, and a pair of hooked pliers will make the job a lot easier. It’s a PITA with standard pliers. If you have a leaking wheel cylinder, it’s gotta be replaced, and if you do, you’ll need either the number on the cylinder to crossref at the parts store or the JB code, which is found on the SPID label in the glovebox. Should be JB5, I think. This is just to ensure you get the match the cylinder to the bore. It’s a reasonable job; the only ****** part is fiddling with the springs that are really stiff going back on.

The E-brake cables might be hanging up from rust in their housings. Try spraying the cable housings with a good penetrating oil to free them up.

I too would suspect the brakes. Especially if it sat for a very long time with the Park brake applied. It could be that they are stuck and hung up, or the cables have seized and even though you've released the park brake pedal, the cables are kinda seiezed or the brake springs aren't strong enough to pull off the brake shoes.

Have you jacked the back end of the truck up and try and turn the wheels one at a time sometimes they will free up. Also check to see if there are any leaks in the brake system. Goes without saying safety first use jack stands to support the rear of your truck before getting under it. Good luck

yep sounds like the E-Brake didn't release for whatever reason. I would start with checking the cable, but at this point the whole system needs checking. highdesertranger

Yeah, sounds like rear brakes sticking. If it's not just from leaving the old brake on, I wonder if something came apart in there.

That's pretty cool, man. Nice job, slaughter.
On rears, I usually just snap a cell pic in case I forget (if it's an odd setup), but printing that out would be even better.
I just did my wheel cylinders and hardware kits, but probably should have turned the drums, cleaned and painted the remaining parts, etc. Maybe next time.
