Here's what I have a 1982 C30 Camper Special for a long time have barley used it but was my father in-laws that past away in 2013. We built it together from a man that had it dissembled, engine out, body off frame, bed off but all sitting in a huge building collecting dust since the early 90's. We picked it up around 2008 and had it together early 09 had it running and driving good and even got a tittle for it which turned out an odd ordeal considering it has a commercial title also vin number (1GBHC34W4CV*****) is weird not able to really decode it and has some really cool RPO codes. Anyway it's sat on the back burner for yrs and never put much thought into it but just recently got into looking at it and finding out how unique this truck is. I'm new to all this forum stuff don't usually post or ask questions i like to try and figure them out on my own. I'm in need of a little clarification on my engine i have. I took some pictures of the casting number and date code the best i could considering how much of a pain it is to get back there to it especially when the engine is caked in oil and dirt. The best i could make out is casting number 3999290 and date code D30 75 tell me if ya'll see anything i'm not. From my research casting number 3999290 is a 402 made 70-72 but if that is true how could the date be 75? Any help with the engine and vin would help. Thanks

Use some brake cleaner with the little red straw. Blast that grease right off there! You might need a couple of the big cans lol

Here's the vin decoder sheet for 1982. Looks like that truck was a factory 1-ton cab&chassis with a 454. Hopefully it is still the original 454 or a Mark V or Gen VI block 454 in there.

Thanks bextreme04 so what do you make of the 3rd digit mean when it says incomplete? And up to this point I've always thought it was the original 454 not sure now

The 366 cu in (6.0 L) Big Block V-8 gasoline engine was used only in Chevrolet medium duty trucks and in school buses. It had a bore and a stroke of 3.935 in × 3.76 in (99.9 mm × 95.5 mm). This engine was made from the 1960s until 2004.The 366 used 4 rings on the pistons, as it was designed from the very beginning as a truck engine. The 366 was produced only as a tall-deck engine, with a deck 0.4 in (10 mm) taller than the 396, 402, and 454 short-deck Big Blocks.

Humm.. mine is not a tall deck heads are at top of water pump housing

I read incomplete as Cab & Chassis(i.e. commercial with cab only and no bed on it so that a work bed can be fitted)

I think at this point you need to clean the heck out of that casting number and see what the head casting numbers are. I'd also look at the numbers stamped on the front passenger side deck surface in front of the head. That will show what the engine was originally installed in and where it was assembled.

My bet is that you have a 396/402 in there. Maybe the 454 used that casting number for a while after 72 and it is just not recorded though?

Hey thanks Bextreme04 I will be getting a hold of those numbers this weekend and should know for sure what I got. As for the stamp up front it will require a little more fanageling will have to remove alternator to get to it I can feel it but can't see it. Will have all the pics and #s posted as soon as I get em.

What I thought it was, now I don't get it but the block date is definitely 1975 and heads are supposed to be 69-70 but there not either there 1976. If anyone has seen this before, I can't find anything online.
