So I have a 78 chev stepside and my old motor (3970010) siezed, I got a new motor (14093638) off facebook. When I went to drop the new motor in, there is a 5/8 inch gap between the bellhousing and the motor when the flywheel and torque converter on the turbo 400 meet up. What would the remedy to this be?

The torque converter is seated all the way back, and the flywheels are not interchangable. On the old motor the flywheel bolt surface sits 7/8 inch off the mounting surface of the engine, with the new one it sits 1.5 inch off the mounting surface.

What shape are the dowel pins on the block in, correct ones? Im not understanding what you mean when you say the flexplates arent interchangeable. If it's a small block chevy, they interchange.

Flexplate on backwards?

They don't interchange between 1 piece and 2 piece rear seal cranks, different bolt pattern and a balance weight. Are you aware the turbo 400 has more than 1 step to seat you spin it and push in tell it pops in,but you're not done you havevto do it again or the converter is not seated. NM just reread where you said the flexplate was physically an inch further out from the block. I got nothing.

Ya, the difference between the two flywheels is 5/8. I'm really at a loss here.

Sounds like you're going to have to find a flywheel that will work

If the flexplate is on backwards the starter gear wont engage correctly. How does that look? There is a reason. Either the flywheel is backwards or the convertor is not seated.

Sbc to the best of my knowledge only hadd 1 flex plate for the 1 piece seal cars. A couple of people have already mentioned it,but is the flex plate on backwards. The weight should be facing the block and the bumps for the torgue converter bolts facing the torque converter.

You can get a flex plate (fly wheel) for the one peace seal cranks that will work with a th350 or th400 from Summit or Jegs if you need a new flex plate
