Talk about breaking parts, the spool will speed that up! No fun on the street. If looking for traction, with little work, throw in a power trax or similar “lunch box locker”. Little pricey, but replaces side and spider gears with no set up. OR stick with replacing the side gears and spiders.

If you do pull the axles, be nice to the axle seals. If you're not careful you will have a leak(if they don't already).

My right seal was leaking when I bought the truck over 10 years ago, I never took the differential apart to replace it, as I was always worried about breaking that little 5/16 bolt. The leak soaked the brake shoes, and I actually should have checked the differential oil, but I forgot about it. But I guess once the level drops below the tube, it really stops leaking.

A spool will be an absolute misery on the road unless you only drive the truck in snow or other low traction conditions. It will just break things and scrub your tires to death. Spools are a race-only part.

....and now that I've posted that I see it's already been covered and acknowledged. Carry on...

I'd add Off-Road ONLY to the RACE ONLY. As in on dirt or sand. But naww, no spool for street driven vehicles. I like the lunchbox locker suggestion, and really, they're not all that pricey to comepare to a full locker or replacing the entire carrier unit for a posi.

Thank you HotRodPC...

I'm going to click on the link, and I may go in this direction. Even though I have a 1000 lb of salt in the back of the Blazer, I really have a major traction problem, the tires are also over 10 years old and getting hard, and they were never that great even in the beginning, but with one wheel appeal, I really can't do a thing in two-wheel drive, not even drive it normally, it just spins that right rear tire like crazy.

I just realized, I'll have to pull the center section out, which will mean reshimming the sideplay, and setting the ring gear to pinion depth.

So that's definitely not happening anytime in the near future, I'd need somebody to help me set up the differential.

What does this MEAN?!?!

>>>Spartan Locker

The Spartan Locker, by USA Standard Gear, provides reliable traction at a low cost. The Spartan locker’s design does not use the thrust washers and has a revolutionary spring and pin design that makes installation a snap! Spartan mechanical locker provides power to both wheels equally when throttle is applied. Clicking noise while cornering and extra driveline slop are common side affects of a mechanical locker. Mechanical lockers may be to noisy and aggressive for some street applications.

  • Made from High Strength 9310 Steel
  • Revolutionary Spring & Pin Design
  • Replaces Spider Gear in a Standard Open Carrier
  • 1-Year Manufacturer's Warranty

Application: 1972-1987 GM 8.5" Rearend<<<

You don't have to reset anything if you just pull the carrier and ring gear out and keep everything in order. If you pull the pinion out it would be best to reset the preload, but even that gets fudged successfully by a lot of people.

Thats why i just ditched my blown rear in favor of another already setup posi rear from another driving truck, i dont trust i can rebuild mine correctly.

I had the rear end completely rebuilt with an Auburn limited slip for $1700.

Previously I tried to go inexpensive with another used stock GovLok with ring & pinion.
Almost 2 years to the day later it blew out again.

The limited slip I have now is aggressive and you can hear the inner tire scrubbing at low speeds.
But it is bullet proof now and I will no longer worry about it.

You do not remove the carrier or have to reset anything. These lockers only replace the side and spider gears. You simply put it in and are good to go!

Mine cost me $250 from craigslist, a 3 hour round trip and it looks clean and good inside. Im happy. Just unsure if its an after market unit in it or not...
