Started trying to get my motor set in my 78 chevy 4x4, when I bought it it had no engine, I had another 80 2wd with a good running 400 so I pulled it out to put in my 78 4wd, I bought new motor mounts( the rubber) an left the same clam shells on the block, when I try to set the motor down onto the rubber mounts the holes don't line up, it's like the front of the engine is setting up to high, I have pushed pulled pried an can't get both holes to line up, I can get one side in but the other needs to cone down about 1inch, I got the trans mount lined up fine, I guess I'm wondering if the 2wd an 4wd mounts are different?

Not sure if they are the same (but I think they are) but I have heard lots of stories like this when the rubbers get replaced. If they are installed correctly, I would try another brand of mount.

Not sure on the later years, but early years you could bolt the mounts to the frame in two different positions depending on whether a small block or big block engine is installed.

If they are lining up, all you can do is keep prying up and down untill it drops into place. LOSEN the mounts to the frame while you are picking up and prying and setting it back down. I put the Poly mounts in my clam shells and ran into that problem. I almost throw wrenches until my wife came out and calmed me down and helped me. 5 minutes later, dropped right in. " I TOLD YOU IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO GET MAD " yea that's what I heard, nobody likes a, I TOLD YOU SO

I had that problem. with the stock mounts there are differences. damn that was so long ago im having trouble remembering correctly.

there is a mount setup for 4wd that uses the transmission support struts/ bars whatever. 2 bars go from plates mounted between the engine block and the mount cups
and go down and attach to the trasnsmission bottom bell housing cover.

If you try using the 2wd cups it doesn't work. I know I thought all chevy small block engine mounts were the same but there not.

I cant remember for sure but I think it was the the cups that were the issue not the frame mounts. Now that I say that im probably wrong.

Ya im pretty sure it was the 2wd cups wouldn't work

When I put new motor mounts in my 84 with the 6.2 I had the same problem. I bet we fought them for a good hour. I finally had a duh moment and loosened the 3 bolts on each that hold the mounts to the frame so I could move them around. Got the 2 long bolts through and then retightened the others.

Check to make sure the mounts aren't upside-down. I can't really explain how they would be without pictures and I'm in class right now. But the higher tab on the mount needs to be at the bottom. ( if that makes sense)
