Hi there,
First post.

My son recently bought a 1978 Chevy Scottsdale K20 that came with full time 4wd but was converted to part time 4wd with locking hubs. The truck is ROUGH, so we've been going through it and I've been teaching him how to work on it.

I just pulled the front rotors off to replace the calipers, rotors, pads, rubber lines and the master cylinder, and the passenger side was toast. It probably hasn't been worked on at all, the bearings were all caked with dry grease and everything had come apart and scarred the bearing surfaces. I need to buy a new hub for it.

The seat on seat on the back of the inner drive gear that the spring sits on was also damaged (about half gone) and the spring was in about 20 pieces from being ground up with no grease.

I've been searching the web for a few days and am unable to find the inner drive gear or the spring. Is this a junkyard only option at this point? There are a few in my area, but older squarebodies are hard to find so I'm hoping not to drive all over just to find trucks that have already had the parts removed.

Thanks so much for any ideas on a source. I'd also be willing to buy them off of someone who may have them.

Since the truck has been converted from full time 4wd to part time 4wd, the locking hubs are not original to the truck.

Do you know who manufactures them? Are they WARN or something different?

I ask because I don't believe the internal parts are interchangeable, at least not between all locking hub manufacturers. I broke a cheap locking hub and ended up buying a new pair of WARN lockouts. They carry a lifetime warranty, which I did take advantage of when one of the hubs started making noises.

Thank you! I'm a bit of a forum junkie, but drive a Dodge Ramcharger so not much Chevy truck knowledge at all.

I can't see a brand or part number on anything, and to confirm, the lockouts are fine, it's the gear assembly that it fits into. (sorry if you already know that)

Do you know if the stock locking hubs were a 90 degree turn or a full turn The locking hubs on his truck are full turn from locked to unlocked. I don't know if the person who did the conversion used the stock hub internals from a truck that had part time 4wd, as the previous owner didn't know it even had been converted.

Here's a pic of the locking part, but unfortunately can't tell if they are Chevy stock parts for a part time truck or aftermarket.

Also, does anyone think the diagram looks like OEM parts that may have been swapped in or if it looks like a particular vendor?

The locking hubs can be pretty cheap but the internals can get pricey.

I thought the internal gear assembly was separate from the locking part on the end, so I understand your post now. It looks like he'll be buying new assemblies.
I'm glad you figured it out.

The one good locking hub is worth keeping as a spare. It could be useful for troubleshooting hub noises or as an emergency spare some day.

Don't be afraid to post some pictures of the truck and further introduce yourself in the "Introduction" section of the forum. We love pictures here, even if the truck is rough.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help! And, good call on saving the good one.

I got the passenger side together for my son last night, just need to get the rubber line in and then I can do the driver's side. The hub is new because the destroyed bearings gouged the bearing surface, but at only $100, it wasn't too bad.

Old brakes don't work like new brakes (my 1977 Ramcharger is all new but nothing like a newer car), but at least they will be as good as they can be and safe.
