The only long bed worth cutting down is the CUCV with the taller stronger frame

I'd think there'd be a lot of squares in Cali since the dems make it so expensive to keep tagged and on the road smogged up and all.

Look a bit more and I'm sure you'll find one.

It's not just squares. I pay the same for my '65 as I do for the '81, it's ********. The '65 used to be $38, now it's over $200!!! It's probably because of the extra lugnuts, all my trucks are 3/4 ton.

Do you know if it being titled a 3/4 ton would allow more leeway, or would it be more restrictive?

Titled as a C20 smog is easier. No cats on C/K 20/30 truck until 1987.

I'll give my opinion since I'm retired California law enforcement (motor officer). If the original poster does anything, I would shorten the frame. You don't want some ******* (like I was) that does a hidden VIN inspection and rains on your parade and impounds your truck.

Personally before I got my K30 I was looking for a diesel titled K20 that I could install a 454 into and never run smog. I spoke to a CHP friend on one of the state task forces and decided against it due to CARB getting more stringent on smog checks. CHP and CARB have mobile test stations where they can pull your vehicle in for a random test at the side of the road. I know they did it the last two years in my city before I retired in 2016.

Basically it isn't worth the trouble.

Considering it's a C20, shortening it might bring on more problems @bluex If it was a C10 I don't know if it would be as much of an issue. Only one way to find out, though, go through with it and then see if you can actually legally drive it afterwards, or if you created a pile of scrap because DMV won't register it or an insurance company won't insure it, or both. He is here in CA, not SC.

I get there are a ton of laws an regs in CA but I honestly don't see what or why an insurance company or the DMV would even care if it's been shortened. The frame is still original to the truck an you aren't changing anything smog related so I don't get what the big deal is.

But I know nothing of CA laws but no one from either insurance ive had or the DMV has ever questioned mine about any of that.
