‘86 GMC 4x4 Sierra Classic 1500 SWB w/305” on a 700r4 in Alaska

I’m looking for a complete tilt steering column.

LMC quit selling my particular steering column. And even when they did it was $1100..!

All I’ve been able to find, on my own, is a place on the East Coast (4000mi away) that rebuilds them for around $600 plus over $200deposit and you have to send them your core to get your deposit back.

Does anybody have a trustworthy source or am I relinquished to: backyards, hot rod replacements, & The role of the dice that is eBay.

thank you for any useful information anybody can give me.

You might try contacting @Grit dog, he's up in the Pacific northwest. Apparently there are a lot of squares up there so maybe he could fix you up with some info.

@BJedi76,

With your year truck there ought to be some in the wrecking yards that way you get one that goes to your truck. There is a group of years that go together where there wasn't many changes, and as long as you get the steering shaft length the right length it will fit. There may be some cars that have your column, and vans to. So that gives you plenty to hunt for. And it sure as heck won't be $1100 or $600 either, cheaper by far I'm sure. Otherwise you will be paying out the butt from any after market source.
Hit the yards, B.J..

We don’t have any local wrecking yards

There were only a couple & they have gone out of business, or going, so no inventory left.

closest salvage yard is 150 miles away and they say that don’t have one.

@BJedi76,

Dang man!! I guess unless you don't find one on this forum, you may have to get one on line. Here, let me give you the name of the place that I got a couple of parts from when I was rebuilding my column a few weeks ago. The name is Steering Column Services, www.steeringcolumnservices.com .

They have good parts and whole columns at much lower prices than the other places. I called and talked to the guy about my needs and I got good service.

After talking to the “steeringcolumnservices” that you recommended, I assume that you meant for me to rebuild my steering column myself, because their “finished” prices are no better than the place on the East Coast.

However, they were much friendlier & they provide detailed instructions on how to remove and install.

I’m not sure I have it in me to rebuild my steering column, but I’m glad for the information. If I choose that route, I will use them.

I had to drive 420 miles (9 hrs), $80 in gas, and $20 for a meal, but i found a steering column for $140.

all it’s missing is the Cruise control.
