I have 2 1/2 side exit exhaust, 40's, and an H pipe. It's loud, I like it.

Are those Flowmaster 40's? If so.........do you like the sound?
Those are 10's actually. They are as loud if not louder than straight pipe. I added a couple flowmaster fx bullet styles as resonators and it's still pretty loud at idle and cruise, a little too loud at idle, but sounds just right under heavy throttle.

I have a set of knock off 40's on my k20 with I think like 8 inch cherry bombs as resonators with headers at the moment. No h-pipe yet. It is pretty mellow and sounds pretty mean honestly. Once the h-pipe is in I'll probably want to take the cherry bombs off but they do clean up the flowmaster rasp. Pretty mid level sound level with a nice top end sound.

I love my h- pipe. The only truck I may not do it to is my grandpas truck since I want it to be like the good old days.

But personally i hate the small block popcorn. Especially 90's chevys. Straight pipe 90's Chevys makes me wanna ****** puke lol. With full length exhaust that is. Ear piercing blap blap blap blap. Sounds like their boyfriends ******** in a tunnel. The h-pipe really cleans up the exhaust noise and makes a small block sound mean with full exhaust. Even dumped before the rear tires, a stock motor with h-pipe doesn't sound like a turd.

Also its super easy to install.

Yeah, I had some flows on years ago and the neighbors hated me. LOL Finally could afford a set of Borla ProsXS and very happy with the sound. Not cheap though!

From my experience Exhaust sound will vary with the routing/pipe geometry. So there is no "one-size-fits-all". If you like the sound as it is leave it alone. I had a '79 C10 with a stockish 350 4bbl where all I had was a Y-pipe and muffler with a short pipe that ended a foot or so behind the cab. I used to get compliments on the exhaust sound all the time. people thought that I had a hig-performance engine in it.
