Not trying to sidetrack your post but I have thought about adding a factory temp/compass mirror. Hoped to find one at the pick a part, but was wondering where the temp sensor is mounted and if there is anything else needed (other than power) to make one work.
No worries. The temp sensor is mounted behind the grille to the radiator support or somewhere along those lines. Best bet is to find the sensor in a junkyard so you can get the weatherproof connector as well.
I used the following parts:
GNTX-177 mirror from a 95-02 GM truck, with the harness. This has temp and compass, but no onstar. Models vary with a single line or double line display.
GM ambient air temp sensor with harness. Part number for the sensor is 15035786. I bought it used with the harness as mentioned above so I dont have the part number for the plug.
The harness for the mirror came with 3 wires so I needed to add 2 wires to complete the circuit for the temp sensor. The diagrams are available online and are very simple. The mirror contains the compass and only needs power and ground. The sensor is a 2 wire hookup directly to the mirror.
Highly suggested mod. I didnt take pics during the install but I plan to snap some and do a write up when the weather clears up again. If you have any more questions just let me know.
