it's stupid question time

yes it's stupid question time and i'm yur host Mike in San Antonio. I am currently working on the brakes of the basket cse (81 c 10 with disk brakes up front) and i can not figure out the size of the nut holding the bulkhead fitting that holds the front flex brake line to the steel hard line. Any suggestions would help. My passengers side flex line is currently in two pieces which doesn't help my stopping power. I have the flex lines but if i can't get that bulkhead fitting off i'm screwed.

I don't know the size of the fitting, but I assume you need the proper brake line flare wrenches. However, I do have one additional crazy suggestion.

Take a trip to Roosevelt Auto Parts or Pick and Pull on the south side and see what they have in squarebody vehicles. Take the wrenches along that you think will work to get the brake parts off, and do some experimenting and learning with the junked vehicles until you find the wrench combination that works to get it off. Then come back home and use the same tools and technique with your truck. Saves a lot of time compared to trying to fix something you mangled or broke on your own vehicle. Its also not unusual to find a vehicle with no engine, so it gives you a lot more free space to work with.

Are you talking about the large nut that surrounds the fitting and steel line on the inside of the frame ?

I had to replace the flex lines on my square, and those fittings on the inside of the frame were an absolute bear to get to, zero space to access them with normal tools.
So, I sacrificed a Chinese wrench that I never used and made a flare fitting wrench out of it, fits in the tight space just right and did the job.
15/16" is the size on my truck, yours may be the same.

i didn't think that there were any squares left in the yards down here. i normally go to pick and pull so i'll have to check out roosevelt parts

As many of us are already painfully aware driving older vehicles, necessity is the mother of invention.

To @mikeoverland :
I won't repeat the words here that I used trying to get that fitting apart, then the idea hit me to make a short handled flare fitting wrench to try.
Just make sure you use a flare fitting wrench on EVERY fitting you work on, there's enough room to get the big one on the nut, and the correct size one on the steel line fitting.
There isn't a ton of space there, obviously no barn dances, but room enough to get it done.

And keep in mind, there's no such thing as a stupid question, just some answers might be.
If there's something you're not sure of, ask on the forums here, LOTS of GREAT folks ready and willing to help with advice and info.

I agrre with you 100% fter reading some of the threads on this site I think that some of the people ln this list are geniuses!
I may be an idiot on alternating tuesdays and federal holidays but I do appear as a "genius" to some but there are plenty of geniuses i got that knowledge from, mostly here, and experience and expertise is relative. I know a frightening amount of things about a 1997-2005 buick park avenue and 3800 series 2 (NA + SC) and 4t65e(HD) it would stun many, but I dont know much about a chevy impala with a, say, 3.5l from the 2000s.


Also a lot of my knowledge is book-learnings but there is a LOT of experience learnings you cant substitute with books that a lot of people here have the benefit over myself. Im only 23 and a little broke atm so remember, your questions arent stupid!

I would only say your questions are stupid if you were told the answer and you asked again. Lol.
