I got to looking at the front suspension in my recently purchased 1987 R10. As you can see from the pictures the spring pockets is in pretty bad shape.

Questions:
1) Is this truck safe to drive?
2) Is the cross member replaceable? Would I have to remove the engine?
3) Would it be easier to just fix the spring pocket? I haven't had a chance to look at the passenger side.
3) Any after market crossmembers that would help with lowering the truck in a safe manner?
4) Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
John

No no no! Do not drive that vehicle.

Your best bet would be to try to find the complete saddle from the wreckers

No...not safe at all! You need to inspect the whole frame, if the cross member is that bad you might have more frame rust saftey issues.

If the frame is solid you can swap the cross member but the motor will have to be temporarily supported or removed(your choice).

Thanks for the info guys. Kind of what I was thinking.

I took a look at the rest of the frame, everything else seems okay, this area is exceptionally bad for some reason.

Something like Scotts bolt in IFS would remedy this situation as well, right?

Are there additional aftermarket systems that people have had good luck with?

Thanks,
John

I had a C10 once and it was exactly the same. In fact the whole body was in excellent shape along with the frame but the front suspension was completely rotted out! Weird!

First picture is the only one I took of the rear frame. The rest of the pictures are of additional parts of the front frame on the drivers side.

From the looks of the other pics i would say MadOgre is correct. The reat seems intact. Weird!
