It's hit or miss but they tend to have a high failure rate. I think it's because they advertise it to a certain power level, and then people get it installed and hammer the **** out of it, and what they should have done was buy a stock rebuilt 4l80e or TH400 to hammer on. Transmissions are not built to be used like the accelerator is an on/off switch and if you are going to do that then you need to start with a strong transmission to begin with.

Did some digging on other forums that chose the 700r4 core/rebuild route. Is this a solid list? Just showing the parts as an example. What brands should I be looking for and or staying away from?

It's not the brand overall, its just that there is really no way to build a 700r4 transmission to the strength levels they sometimes advertise. If you drive sane and do daily driver stuff I am sure their units are fine but I'm not sure I could force myself to cough up 1900 bucks for a rebuilt transmission.

But it looks like you have already done the homework and if you add up to those parts, does it add up to 1800 dollars worth of transmission?

Keep in mind most transmission rebuilds at a dedicated shop will run you around 1500 dollars and that includes the labor of installation and removal? and I am sure you are thinking, well... Monster upgrades your transmission. So lets figure. You've done some math. You have about 100 or so bucks in parts there. You figure you can buy a used rebuildable 700R4 at a wrecking yard for 99 bucks (Pick-n-pull pricing mind you), A TCI master rebuild kit goes for around $200. So you do the math after that. Seems to me there is a big disparity between 400 dollars to rebuild it yourself vs 1900 for a finely painted transmission case with a bill of goods you can't really confirm....

I think the only thing I have not accounted for is a new TC, which of course is probably a good piece to get after a complete overhaul.

I'm not a total DIY guy mind you, there are some things I'll farm out, but if it costs me a third the price to learn how to do something once, and even if I screw it up once can still save money re-doing it a second time.. Well, I don't mind the lesson. I guess the key is I have the liberty of not having to depend on the Jimmy as my dailyd river right now... Totally your choice from here, and I am sure if you are not heavy footed all the time then your literal mileage my vary, lol...

Last time I priced a nice upgrade to 700r4 with rebuild kit it was just a bit over $1k in parts. But monster had a bad overall reputation on quality control and skipping on new parts that supposed to be included.

I have seen a bowtie 700r4 live behind a built 400, and Dana at probuilt has good overall reputation. He is active on the ls forums as well.
