Did a bit of googling, found out that the xd9000i above is just shy of 22” wide, and 10” tall. My grill guard measures 29” give or take outside to outside of the uprights. So I think I’m ok there, and there looks to be plenty of room for the solenoid housing to go up between the radiator and grill. There is actually a good bit of room in there. And since we’re going to space it down below the bumper, I think she’ll fit just fine. And I’ll only be in for about $150 for the plate and a new hawse fairlead. The winch has a roller fairlead currently, but I want to go with a hawse style since it’s less obvious. Probably will paint the hook black too, so it blends in better. Obviously the idea is to keep it as stock looking and stealthy as possible.

I only see one problem with mounting like that. Any pulls up and out are gonna gash the bumper, or wear out synthetic rope quickly. You can see where it hit the CUCV bumper.

Yea I thought about that, but since this is a driver and not a hardcore wheeler, I’ll probably be doing more yard work and snow drift recovery than anything. Probably won’t see any extreme angles. I’ll also mount it as far forward as possible, hopefully with the fairlead ending up directly under the bumper. And I’ll be running steel cable instead of synthetic line. We’ll mock it up tomorrow afternoon and see exactly where everything will end up sitting. But yea I had considered that to be an issue.

or maybe you could fabricate a sleeve or c channel to extend the reel guide that attaches to or rests against the bottom of the bumper. it could be made incognito enough to hardly notice. the cable could drag it at high angles and it'd be easily replaceable as a sacrificial piece for your bumper.

I have several old off road magazines from the late 70’s that have ads for the side winder. I like the idea myself, but I think for the hickey you had to cut the bumper. I’m trying to avoid that. After messing with the winch for a good while yesterday, we finally figured out that it has a bad solenoid for out. It pulls in perfectly. And after looking and measuring, it seems like it will fit behind the bumper. Not high enough to come through the bumper, but should have the cable come out just below it. I’m now thinking about making a steel plate to bolt to the bottom of the grill guard uprights, and putting the fairlead there. That will get it out far enough to prevent any damage to the bumper. My uncle used to have a small winch on his 77 in the same place and he said it’s a pain laying in the mud trying to work the winch. I’m aware that my access will be limited but I don’t plan on having this truck in any mud like that so I’m going to risk it.

Just picked up a traveller winch plate from tractor supply for $55. Less than half of a warn plate from Amazon. Also got a replacement solenoid for the winch. Now I just need a new cable and to put in a new remote receptacle. The previous guy had it mounted on a car hauled so he drilled a hole through the original plug in and hard wired a toggle switch. Have to fix that crap and she’ll be ready to live again

If anyone had a winch that they converted to synthetic line and has the old cable laying around, let me know. I need either 100’ or 125’ of 5/16 cable. Need the hook too. The cable that is on there is too big, and has some janky looking hook setup. As mentioned, I could also use the remote plug in if someone has one laying around.

Got the solenoid replaced but haven’t had time to test it. I’ve been pricing parts, looks like new cable will run about $125. And a new remote plug in will be another $60 or so. But that should be all I need to get it back together and functional. I’m tempted to repaint it, but I probably won’t since it’ll be behind the bumper.

It's only been about 35 years since I had a warm 8274, but I believe the P.O. Had used a round trailer connector for the remote.

That’s what they started with. Pretty much a standard round 4 pin. Then they went to a 3 pin and now a 5 pin. The remote from my 8274 is a 5 pin, but they will work on the 3 pin models from what I’ve read. This winch is a 3 pin model. The previous owner decided to drill out the plug and straight wire it for whatever reason. I hooked it up to my truck this evening and it now powers in and out. It was just a bad solenoid. I need to fix the plug and I’ll be in business.

Got the new plug and wires it in today. Very easy, only 3 wires. Now it works with my remote instead of having to hot wire it. I’m going to have to get the correct cable though, what’s on there is too much/big to work with this plate.
Next step is to make it fit under the truck. May get to that next weekend.

Something like this

I did approximately the same thing - but I put a drawbar hitch on the front
frame and use it to mount my winch. I've had my '86 K5 totally up off all 4
wheels and dragged it up a 45° incline and have never even had a squeak
from the welds and mount.

It's a 9K Warn, power in/out.

You might notice that I extended a solid 2" square bar out through the front
- it runs all the way into the receiver actually. This allows me to add-on 2"
extensions and other equipment for special occasions.

I have cab controls, a remote hard-wired and although I stopped using it, a
wireless unit that "hangs-on" a little bit too long in running to be safe when
winching up close.

There are also some "00 stranded pure copper" cables that run to the rear
receiver hitch for if/when I might need the winch on the back.

Hopefully that won't happen often 'cause that bugger's heavy for a 75 year
old retired fisherman to hump around!
