Is it time to scrap the 16.5" wheels?

I've run 35 12.5 16.5 BFG AT's for a long time, they look to be out of production now. The very limited brands of tires with an AT tread are scary expensive! I've had my eyes open for some type of 17" rims, no luck so far. The H2 wheels seem to be reasonable price and plentiful, still not sure if I like them. Kind of leaning toward MT classic or Pro Comp Alloy or similar. What are you running ? I have looked through the Show me your 8 lug thread.

Lots of stuff out there for 16-17” rims tire wise. 18” is starting to get a bit big to maintain the more classic wheel/tire ratio unless you’re running 35s or larger, which you are. I like my American Racing 8 holes, but it seems like they’re discontinuing the 16” ones. The 17” versions are available.

Right, most of what I see are 15 or 17. I was actually looking at American racing or Pro comp alloy in 17's for my k5. This will give me the room to run the disk brake with e-brake setup in the rear from a 2000's truck.

I think US Indy mag makes 8 lug slot mags in 17

The only tires left for the 16.5 is the military humvee tires
But they are 37”

Im running 17" pro comp d window steel wheels with kanati trail hog 315/75/17 at tires. Wheels were like $60-80 a piece and i want to say the tires were right around $200 a piece. I think the trail hogs are fantastic, but they wouldnt be for everyone. Theyre really thick, which means heavy and hard. You feel every bump, especially with stiffer springs(i only have 25psi in them, no squat). I love the tires because they are thick, and tough as nails. Lots of highway miles(not sure off hand, but they've been on there for right at a year) and my driveway is hard on tires. Steep, rocky hill that i had trouble getting up when my front shaft was out and had transfer locked(full time 4wd). Not a cut, chip, or scratch and they are just now starting to look like they're wearing a little. Not very loud for being so aggressive, but they are now starting to hum a little.

I went with 17" American racing Ansen slots, loved the 'ol slots, just couldn't find one without the fake beadlock look. Still like them on my 86 with 37's. 17's or 18's are almost the same price for tires, so if your after more disk clearance go with 18's.

I'm in this same boat. My 15 year old 33x12.5x16.5 BFG MTs will be getting replaced with some Falken ATW3 in 305\70-16 10ply that I intend to put on my Ultra type 50/51 which are 16x8" with -6 offset so they should clear my drums and front discs fine. Hopefully they wont discontinue 16" wheels, give me too much sidewall flex, or narrow my overall track width. Guess we'll see.

Here is what they look like with some smaller tires. I personally like them (even though I would trade them for some slot mags in a heart beat)

Like Roundhouse said, US Mag is making the Indy in a 17" 8 lug. If you want to keep the same look it's a great option. LT315/70R17 is the equivalent of a 35" tire. I was debating these for my truck, but I didn't think they looked correct on an '85. I went with an American Racing AR-172 Baja in 16x10" with 4.5" BS. I have LT305/70R16's since I since wanted to fit in my garage.
