So I took apart my intake because I had a leak went to seal it up and my cheap caulking gun broke at the Handel(bent to point of no fixing) life kinda got in the way and wasn' Abel to get to it right away now it' rusty mostly the motor side not really actual intake. What' the safest bet to clean that up?
I'l try and get pics tomorrow

CLR, wire wheel, purple power, then wipe with alcohol or something that evaporates. Probably overkill but whatever. Steel wool might get it all in one shot. I would just want the mating surfaces super clean before putting it back on.

So I finally got it on. One thing I ran into was after I got it clean as it warmed up it started to sweat so I let it warm up as much as I could cleaned it up again dried it started putting gaskets on. Hopefully doesn't bite me in 5he ass later.
I ended up using the black rubber gaskets on the China wall only because I wasn' sure of exactly how everything was supposed to sit. I did rtv the water ports and the joints though . I also sprayed some gasket tack stuff to hold it in place. Put intake on snugged up bolts letting it sit for day re torque them. I'e never done this before so hopefully it pans out. Thanks for the tips and all the info on this forum it' been a life saver.

Good cleanup job. Did you run a thread chaser thru the bolt holes?

I didn't have any taps so I just used a clean bolt and ran it through a couple of times. Now that I think of it I didn't put anything on the threads of the bolts.

Here is a helpful tip for the future. You can make your own thread chaser. Take a bolt and cut flutes in it opposite the threads with a cut off wheel. I usually put 4 in. Works well in a pinch. Just clean the flutes after each hole.

I'll have to keep that in mind next time.
I've ran into another issue went to put the distributor in and it won't seat in the right spot. I didn't set the motor to tdc when I took it out i just marked the rotor with a paint marker with the brass nipple on intake. I'm usually good for messing with things till I get it but it's -40 C so freezing is all that's happening lol.
And I guess I made an extra mark on the dizzy body for some reason so not sure what side the vacuum advance goes on. Looks like passenger side cause looks like oil pressure sensor will be in the way.
Biggest thing I've learnt is take pictures before you pull things apart.

Good to see it got all cleaned up. I got the same issue with my manifold. Started to clean it, got stopped in the middle and a little bit of light surface rust on the inside. I'll see if I can find a long wire cone for a die grinder.

If you ever need to clean up rusted cast iron or steel again, you can use a scotch pad and wd-40 or PB Blaster. Then wipe it clean with a rag.

Good to see you plugged the ports. A small shop vac works wonders doing gasket removal.

I use a halogen work light and a torpedo heater and it sort keeps up but weather is up and down here. Like today it' 0 So you never know.
I ended up using my multi tool to turn the oil pump. It' not perfect but it' better than it was. Worse comes to worse I'll start over once it' running.
That' about all I got done spent rest of night looking for the carb bolts. Oh the joys.
