235 is I think an inline six from the mid 50's. 216 235 261 family.
I recall one in a 1942 deuce and a half 10 wheel drive flatbed.
The starter was a pedal on the floor next to the gas pedal.
Amazing amount of work that truck would do with that six banger.

Not that this has anything to do with this thread, but someone brought it up, and I'm bored...

The 1917/1918 -288ci, was the first overhead valve, water cooled, 90° V8, produced by Chevy, and made a whopping 36hp. Chevy wouldn't offer another V8 until 1955, starting with the first gen 1 small block 265ci, and the first big block not coming out until 1958 in 348ci

List of stock size gen1 and 2 small blocks that I know of (not including aftermarket sizes, anything bored out, or stroker kits):
262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 383, and 400.

Gen 1 big blocks:
348 and 409

Gen 4 big blocks:
366*, 396, 402, 427, and 454.
(* tall deck)

And the Gen 7:
496.

Dont know much about LS or LT series, don't want to, Haha.

The most I know about the straight 6 that everyone here is talking about, is that it ran from about 62 to 88, and that in these years it was in its 3rd generation.

List of gen 3 straight 6 that I know of: 194, 230, 250, and 292.

I personally own a 250, 3 -283s, a 305, 6 -350s, a 454, and 2 -378s.

If you don't have to meet 1986 emissions specs, try to find a 250 without the "integrated" cylinder head & manifold. They are prone to cracking. Also skip the engines with two chambers, valves, and hoses on top of the valve covers.

I agree that a 292 would be perfect and probably makes 25% more torque than a 250. Also, if your truck's axle ratio is numerically lower than 3.08, a 250 will not be very happy. Not sure about 86 models, but in 82 the standard axle for a 350 with auto trans was 2.52.

On another note, I went the opposite direction on my 82 -- from 250 to 350. As I recall you will need to drop the motor mount brackets to the lower set of holes on the frame. And of course you will need different mounts on the engine. Other things that I remember being different are fuel line length, fan shroud, and of course engine wiring. However, you won't need to touch the transmission crossmember or change driveshaft length or shift linkage, if you stick to a TH350.

Attached are pictures of my 1982 250-six. These may help you with wiring and motor mount brackets.

Don't forget the mighty 267 produced from 79 to 82.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. As far as reason to change. Just nostalgia and ease of servicing. I had a K20 and a K10 years ago with the inline six. Just loved them. I'll check out the Novak Guide. Thanks
If you're doing a 292 swap, you're going to need the special passenger side frame braket.

I actually have a 292 that I'm going to swap into my '74 eventually, but I just haven't yet.
