FACT... the 700 is an expensive tranny to rebuild or, build up.
Even so, they don't like to be lugged around. A BB with torque can produce low rpm grunt that ravages a 700. No towing or snow plowing.
Gear low enough to treat your overdrive like 4th gear. Don't think you can lug in overdrive on the highway.

A 700 is perfect for a 1/2 ton short box. Don't hang them under a heavy truck.

Some people and their internet buddies have just had a few 82-86 200,000+ mile 700r4's quit on them, and now they have a bad rep.

Theyre not garbage, but like matt said, if you're pushing the kinda power that 90% of the 700r4 haters dont even have, then i'd upgrade.


Im not preaching the 700 sermon for my big block c10, and i wont, because i know it'll never survive.
Shes making 600hp figures

But in a <400 hp app, run the **** out of a 700

After driving the truck 2 hours home, I've found that the trans shift so silky smooth, that I want to keep it.

She sure does 100 if i push it.
I dropped about a total of 1k in all new steering and front suspension, with big block coils and ACDelco coilover shocks, all new moog **** all around.... she LITERALLY handles turns like a modern car at reasonable speeds, and will run just as fast as modern cars down the highway.... its crazy man lol

I didnt expect that outcome, but if i push it, it sure as **** does, not to mention, my yukon duragrip keeps rear tire slippage to a very minimum

100 mph in a burban.

My '78 Burb pulls real well up to 100mph and beyond. GPS certified too (stock speedo is about useless these days).

Ive always said (and no one believes it till they own one) the 1/2 or 3/4 ton suburban is the most aerodynamic of the squares. The only wind drag is the windshield.

They haul a family around better, they tow better, they ride better, and they go down the hwy better than any other model of squarebody.

With a reasonable small block or big block, and a solid suspension setup, they even impress the **** out of everyone when they launch (heavy in the rear end unlike a pickup or even a car) and tow.


I showed up my buddies 2000+ 1500 with the 5.3 when i outran him towing a heavier truck than him to the trails


Nobody believes it till they own one lol


He said "you need to get rid of that thing, get a later model LS truck"

Say I were to somehow come into ownership of an '86 Suburban C20 with a 454, th400, and 4:10 gears.

"Hypothetically" would a "hypothetical" Th700r4 survive behind a "hypothetically" stock "hypothetical" 454? The "hypothetical" Th400 is still good, but with the "hypothetical" 4:10 gears, the gas mileage is "hypothetical" ****. So I'd like to "hypothetically" swap the "hypothetical" Th400 for a "hypothetical" Th700r4.

Is this a good "hypothetical" idea? A "hypothetical" Gear Vendors Overdrive is out of the "hypothetical" range of my "hypothetical" wallet. Also I don't want to deal with a "hypothetically" complicated and "hypothetically" expensive "hypothetical" 4L80E swap.

Or should I just "hypothetically" swap the "hypothetical" 4:10 gears in the "hypothetical" 14 bolt rear end for some "hypothetical" highway gears.

"Hypothetically," I'd want to put a lot of highway miles on this truck, so the "hypothetical" current set up wouldn't "hypothetically" work.

What do you guys think about this "hypothetical" scenario?

I've actually thought about this some. My square is a C20 305 / 700R4 3.41, which is marginal at best for the towing and hauling I do. If I can ever get caught up enough to do so, I'll either be going 4.10 or 4.56. But one day my 200K + 700R4 will need to be rebuilt or replaced and so will the 305. In the back of my head I'm thinking mild built 350 or going BB and putting it in front of 700R4. Hopefully that's a ways down the road. I just wanted to say that Hypothetically I might one day be considering something similar.

I thought it was funny, but I do agree that's damn fine looking square! If I didn't already have to many rigs, I would really like to add a suburban to the fleet.

Also, for those of us who live in areas where we have snow in the winter, the weight distribution of a suburban makes them excellent winter vehicles. They are animals in the snow and have better traction on ice than pickups. I typically don’t even use 4x4 unless it is deep snow.

Loved my dad's 84 suburban and it had the 6.2 diesel in it. That thing would cruise 95 all day. I know because I drove it a lot back then. They never knew I drove it like that tho. It was still in great shape when he traded it in too.
