My Driver Side auto locking hub is failing to engage I think only in freezing temperatures (1983 K10 P/U) but works when its warm outside.
The way I understand its operation, when the half shaft spins faster than the tire, the hub locks. When the wheel spins faster than the half shaft in the opposite direction that it was last locked, it will disengage. I've seen this behavior when I jack up one wheel off the ground and spin the front drive shaft by hand, the jacked up wheel locks and spins while I am turning the driveshaft, until I spin the wheel in the opposite direction (I am no longer holding the drive shaft), and it unlocks.
When I spin the inner part of this hub by holding the tabs that face the wheel bearing, it rotates inside the hub. I expected it to be locked together especially now that it's all warmed up.
I've never added grease to this hub and never taken it apart (which I hear is not fun).
Is there a way to bench test this hub?
I know some will say to replace it with a manual hub (I like the Mile Marker 104 hub) but I really like my auto lockers.
