High Beam?

So while replacing the high beam switch on the steering column I pulled the little rod out of the signal by the wheel. How do I get it reconnected? I can’t easily figure out how to even get access to it? Thanks in advance.

It came apart at the top lever or you are having issues toward the bottom of the column?

At the top lever. Where it goes into the actual lever you pull to turn high beams on and off. The rod slid down and out. Away from the steering wheel.

to the best of my recollection you should be able to push the rod back into place just operate the lever so you can feel it engage and then reinstall the switch.

It’s the little rod that runs down the steering column from the lever and into the new high beam switch I bought.

That’s what I was thinking but I haven’t been able to get it into anything yet. And you can’t actually see the area it goes in because it’s covered up.

Online it has the most complicated directions of getting back in. Getting a special tool to take the steering wheel off. Then removing all the steering column cover, just so you can see the tiny hole the rod goes into.

With the switch on the bottom out of the way, you can probably push the rod back up top and when you operate the high beam lever feel it move. It just has a curved end that butts up against a little plastic piece. One you have it in place, hook the lower switch back up.

The special tool for removal of the steer wheel is two legs under the wheel, pressing against the steer wheel and with the horn cap removed and the nut screwed part of the way off to protect the threads of the steering shaft, rap the top of the nut/shaft with a hammer, might take several but it will pop against the nut, then remove nut and steer wheel.
You want the nut to be just a thread or two above the shaft. If done proper, the nut can be reused.

I recently had to tighten the tilt column on my 87.
I was able to borrow the removal tool from Autozone.
If you can't fish it back into position from the bottom you will need to pull the wheel and lock plate.
Then you will be able to access the high beam lever.

And there is a tool for compressing the lockplate spring to get the C ring removed in order to get off the lockplate.

Thank y’all for all the info. I haven’t been back in here in a bit because my baby. My 85 Chevy K10 was stolen back in June in Fort Smith, AR.
