It is designed to have a bit of slack when the hood is open.

When the hood is closed that free-play allows the latch to move into the locked position. Don't reduce that distance.

The cable termination is right where it should be - they all look like that.

So you're saying it's not his pull distance is the problem? Must be the mechanism itself that is bad?

thanks for the info! so i guess the cable itself almost never fails.

the release hadn't stopped working but i was afraid it would because i don't remember it having that much slack. that's one thing that sucks about the 80's model trucks; the way the hood is released and the hood hinges. on the 70's trucks the release is behind the grill and the hinges never ware out; only thing bad about that style is anyone can walk up and take your battery or what ever they want.

I read his OP carefully and he did not actually define any real problem - other than the fact that he had to open his hood a lot - to check the coolant or something.

The crimp nut on that cable looks like its in the same exact position as mine. IMO that is not the problem. Something else is not right if it is not releasing.

get a wood wedge and stick it between the hood and the core support right by the hood latch. you will be prying the core support down and the hood up a little. just enough to get the socket under the hood. use a half inch socket on a extension pull the 2 bolts out of the hood latch.

its pretty easy i have done it many times

this is the best pic i could find fast to show the bolts i circled them in red

I ran into my hood not opening. First, it was because the whole latch mechanism was pushed down all the way. Loosen those two bolts on each side, slide the mechanism up half way and tighten them. The second problem has to do with the spring. I think it's worn down or something. Right now I put a sock there to make just enough added distance on the end of the spring that it has enough force to push the hood open when you unlock it with the cable from the inside. An alternative way to open the hood is to drive around the neighborhood, and keep pulling the hood release cable and hitting dips and bumps until the hood just pops open from the movement and stress. It worked for me.

Are you saying the cable is to long to where it's not getting a good pull to open the latch? If so, get a crimp on fishing weight and put in that gap to take up some of the space.
