Hey guys, putting my vehicle on the Road over here in New Zealand. It’s a 83 k20, is there any way to identify the GVW, my friends 73 has a plate like this but I can’t find anything on mine.

The vin plates went away in 1979, when the VIN moved to the dash for the 1979 model year, just containing the VIN and continued up there until present day pretty much.

So an 83 should have this on the door-

The vin plates went away in 1979, when the VIN moved to the dash for the 1979 model year, just containing the VIN and continued up there until present day pretty much.

So an 83 should have this on the door-

My doors have been replaced at some stage unfortunately. There is nothing there.

If you look through the GM document posted, you will be able to get an idea of what you have.

Standard K20 (6000 GVW) should have 5 leaf rear springs, 3.23 ratio axle standard, and will have load range C or D tires

C6P option (8600 GVW) should have 8 leaf rear springs, usually 3 leaf front springs, 4.10 ratio axle standard, and it should have load range D or E tires (most likely E)

Definitely have the C6p, the spare tyre was a 235/65/16. Larger drums and 56inch 8 leaf. 4.10 ratio.
Unfortunately I have to prove to the vehicle entry certifier in NZ what it is with some form of written identification.

You should pay the GM Heritage Center a visit and download the data books for your truck.

If you wade through that you'll be able to decipher all the VIN, SPID and other documents for your specs and options.

The only way to do that since everything is missing from the truck is to email the GM Heritage archive at [email protected] or fill out this form here: https://www.gm.com/content/public/us/en/gm/home/heritage/archive/archive-form.html

They will charge you $50 USD and then you will get emailed the original VIN sheet and original vehicle invoice that calls out all factory options and installed components from when it was originally produced and shipped to the first dealer or POS(point of sale). I got mine within about a week of sending in the filled out form.

Mine was just old enough that C6P didn’t exist yet and the GVW isn’t in the VIN. GM made changes after 81 though and your invoice would include the C6P RPO and they will also send you a VIN decoder that will show you have the high GVWR, which is the “G” in the 4th VIN digit.

Also, the "M" code engine designation in the VIN means it was the high GVWR(over 8600lbs) that was the cutoff for heavy duty emissions in the US at the time. HD emissions meant that outside California it would not have EGR, smog pump, or catalytic converters installed.

I think I’ll do that. What was the options of payment. Could be a bit hard from the other side of the world.

Using Visa to pay is an easy way to pay for it in US$ and let your bank convert it to NZ$ for your account. I do it frequently the other way around when visiting GB (pounds) or Europe (euros).
I think Mastercard also works the same way.

In my experience, the bank conversion rate is usually a little better than what you would get if you went to one of the money exchanges in the airport.
