Auto hubs must be disengaged when put back into 2wd. You must reverse up to ten feet. Mine disengaged at the slightest backing up. Other wise they click when you go down the road in 2wd after being in 4. Did they even put auto hubs on 205's? What is your shift pattern ? 4L 2 N 4H or 2WD 4HI N 4LO

With my NP203 and auto hubs I don't have to do any reversing to get them to disengage. I just put it back into 2HI and away I go.

You don't have auto locking hubs, you have hubs that are locked solid all the time.

Auto hubs can start clicking and making noise even if they have been disengaged for weeks. Like I said before, they can fail and give you trouble whenever the hell they feel like it.

Boone, it may actually be a 208... certainly not a 203, but the tags really really faded, i thought it said 205 when i was under there... could very well be wrong though. The shift pattern is 2HI 4HI N 4LO

Thanks for all the help!
Bucket, since the manual hubs have 6 screws instead of 5 the auto has, can you switch them over fine, the extra screw doesnt effect anything?

Thanks again for all the help everyone!

That is a 208 shift pattern. The 208 should be punch stamped into the tag. Get some brake cleaner and spray that sucker clean, maybe it will show up.

Thanks! I did that, and turns out it is a 208, my mistake!

Ok, so when you go from 4 HI to 2 hi. You must stop and reverse some. You will hear a click and the should be the auto hubs disengagement.

Nope, your replacement manual hubs will have the 6 screw holes and a matching dial/cover.

When I've had auto hubs and they actually still worked properly, they made no noise whatsoever when they disengaged in reverse. And I know the owners manual says to back up a certain amount, but mine always unlock as soon as the truck starts to roll in reverse. I don't know if that's normal, but that's how both of my auto hub trucks have been.
