The 79 I just got had been sitting for 2 1/2 years and will not run without pouring gas in carb. I was told it was running about a year ago. I replaced the fuel pump and it still has the same condition. I know there should be an inline filter somewhere along the fuel line but is there anything in the fuel tank that could restrict flow?

If your truck has a Quadrajet carburetor installed, the fuel filter is at the INLET.
A one inch wrench and a 5/8 are required for replacement.
Installation is the opposite of removal.
Ensure to put the spring back in and know the filter hole opens to the fuel line.
Use a little teflon tape or similar on the threads.

It'll beat the snot out of dropping the tank! Start at the carb, dude. The Quadrajet fuel filter costs about 3 bucks.

If you gotta go to the tank , i'm much quicker to bet your fuel line has split and is sucking air but I think that is unlikely TOO, albeit MORE likely.

Start at the carb and work your way to the tank to eliminate all possible problems..

I would remove fuel line from carb, put line in a plastic container, have a helper start to see if it pumps fuel into container. If it does, then maybe the filter is clogged or needle and seat stuck. If no fuel pumps into container, then the line (sock) is clogged. Possibly sock has come off or deteriorated and has trash blocking line. Also check all fuel lines from carb to tank to see if any are bad sucking air. Last thing, drop tank and replace sender, all rubber lines, seals, flush out any metal lines with air and/or carb cleaner.

Hopefully , if you are lucky, will not have to drop tank.

Cool. I was checking on a filter and found there is only one in the carb. I wondered if there were any rubber lines in the tank that might deteriorate. As soon as I don't have to lay in snow I'll check it out.

This ethanol 0bama gas can cause a lot of water in the tank causing your pickup tube to rust and get a pin hole in it. Like the others said though work your way to the back.

Ok, I ran a hose from fuel pump to gas can with no luck so I might not have to drop the tank. The carb is getting gas to it but that's where it stops. I ordered a rebuild kit, maybe a float issue??

Try tapping on the carb near the float needle to free it up.

E10 will destroy a carb in less time than yours was sitting for, if you have decent precipitation where you are.

My old carb looked great before I parked the truck. 6 months later the inside looked like it came from the bottom of the ocean.

I bypassed the tank by using a gas can. No luck = same condition. I should have just started at the line that goes into carb but didn't. Carb gets gas at the line going into it but the gas does not get into the carb. I did change the filter in the carb and tested without the filter. I'm thinking float or needle problem.

Now try tapping on front center of carb with screwdriver handle to see if needle loosens up to let fuel in bowl. Be careful not to tap too hard so not to cause damage. May take several taps to free it up. If that will not work, then a rebuild kit is necessary. If needle does open, there could be small pieces of rubber from needle stuck in the seat which needle will not stop fuel flow and could cause over filling of fuel bowl or flooding.

What method did you use to bypass the tank?
You attached the hose onto the mechanical pump?
Then put the can where? on the ground ? On the fender?
