What are the major differences between the standard gas tanks used on 1973-1980 and 1981-1987 trucks? I know the filler necks are different because of gas cap/gas door setups in the bedsides. Are the tanks actually different?

I'm putting an 83 bed on a 1975 3/4 ton 4x4 frame and want to know which tank to go with. I have both the tank that came with the frame and the tank from the bed truck. The 83 tank is good and solid. Not sure yet about the 75 tank. Thanks.

The tanks I'm almost certain are the same except the filler hose diameter is 1/4" smaller on pre 1982 trucks (nothing to do with the fuel door change a few years earlier).
The puzzle will be getting the right filler hose.
