Gas tank cleaning

OK, so wasn't sure where to post this, this seemed like the best place, but I'm looking to clean all the stuff out of my gas tank.

3 years of gas sitting in it exposed to the open air has done it some harm...

There's like a gunk in the bottom, I'm NOT ok with sending that **** thru my 502.

Anything I can pour in with something else like water and let it sit for a while?

Like **** gone?

If the tank is out of the vehicle, a gallon or two of gas with some nuts & bolts sloshing around should work, rinse and repeat if needed.

I was wondering about using actual gas.

Small rocks, a chain, nuts and bolts. Some e-85 if you can get it will do a good job of eating that stuff up. If you use nuts and bolts, or rocks take a count going in and make sure they all come back out lol. You can also use a chain and tape it to the tank or otherwise keep it attached on the exterior for easy removal.

I've also heard of guys being happy with Berryman carb cleaner in the tank.

If I dump a bunch of acetone mixed with just regular 87 and rocks **** nuts and bolts and ****, that may get it all out.

White vinegar does nicely as well, fill er up and let it sit for 24 hours then rinse.

I used mineral spirits and dumped a pound or two of new stainless bolts and nuts in it. Put my floor jack under one end and raised it up about 6". Lift up the other end and let it slosh back and forth a dozen times. Let it sit for awhile and repeat. I did that for a few days total and it looked brand new when I was done.

I've also heard of guys putting a few boxes of BB's in them too.

Right now it's sitting with a bunch of 87, kerosene, and acetone in it.

Wild combo, but it's what I have.

I'll see how it looks when I return to it this evening.. Shake it up a bit, if it's still nasty, I guess I'll have it hot tanked.

When my Pop finally got his '68 Pontiac finished, it had 20 year old gas in the tank. He took the line off the tank, and blew the air through it from the carb-side. He said it was stuck and then popped out a glob. He hooked it back up to the tank. Before starting it for the first time, we put 10 gallons of fresh fuel with a heavy dose of carb/injector cleaner. This was a fresh rebuild on the engine, carb, the entire car. It fired right up, and ran great, and has never had an issue with anything plugging up, gumming up or anything, and he drives it all the time. Even took it to Arizona a month ago.

Buy a new Spectra Tank from Rockauto or other vendor... They are pretty good quality and reasonably priced.

I have heard some guys say to put their bolts or ball bearings or chain in it with their solvent of choice and put it in the back of their truck and seal it up and drive around for a week. Don't go easy, slamming on brakes and fast starts.
