Made the mistake of over filling one of the saddle tanks. Got fuel pouring from the canister in the front next to the radiator. Is that canister ruined now, it's probably full of gas. I'll check it in the morning.

Yeah. Unfortunately, it's dead.

Shiite... It might be worth it to drill a couple holes in it to retrieve the $15 worth of fuel that's trapped inside when you replace it?

Going to try to shake the fuel out, let it dry out and reuse. It's only an evaporation canister right. All the pollution equipment, (air pump, egr,..) has been removed.

How can fuel be pouring out of the hose going into the evaporator canister. Siphoned 2 gallons out of each tank. Now as I'm cleaning out the canister, little black chunks are coming out. Now I need to fix another problem.

Finding out it only pours out when I switch to left (aux) tank.

Is it possible you tied the return line to the vapor recovery line when you had the tank out somehow?

Unhook the vapor line from the canister and have someone cycle the key on and off while the left tank is selected. See if it starts puking gas when the fuel pump is active...

Fuel lines not crossed that I know of. And yes, fuel pukes into the evaporator canister when left tank is on.

Then it has to be crossed, right?
Things that come to mind:

Return line from the switch valve attached to the vapor recovery hardline near the tank - would pump fuel to canister anytime pump runs, a few seconds every time the key is turned on & any time the engine is running. Have someone cycle the key on and off (without starting the truck) while you watch the line, if it starts spitting or flowing fuel I would bet this is the issue.

Return lines not plumbed correctly, or return valve not switching sides, IE: running the engine from one tank while the return goes to the other would cause the other tank to overfill and puke out of the vapor recovery line. Without a gas gauge you would not be able to see if the fuel level inside the other tank is rising.

vapor recovery line coming out of the sending unit somehow in contact with fuel inside the tank - would puke fuel back to the canister sporadically dependent on how full the tank is, vapor pressure in the tank, and driving conditions.

Not sure if it's the same but on my 83 there are 2 same size hoses coming from the cannister one goes to air cleaner and one to the carb body. when I switched them once the cannister puked gas. Seems like that would be the same on both tanks though. Pull it at the cannister and see if it's full of gas.

Is the fuel tank being pressurised because of a non venting fuel cap?

As others have said, yeah the valve is most likely the culprit.

As you said yourself, who cares if the canister is dead? All the other emissions parts are gone, why do you even still have the canister in the first place? Do you just like looking at it, or do you want the extra pound or so it adds to the truck? Lol ditch that dumb thing.

Oh and FWIW, don't be worried about the little black chunks coming out. It is a charcoal canister afterall, I would assume those chunks are just from what's inside the canister and not somehow a sign of a larger problem.
