For the pros.... Axle shaft question. Please advise

Hello GmSB Buddies. I hope all is well.

I have this long axle shaft that the seals might have failed on my Corporate 10 bolt
28 spline on my 1984 K10.

I would really appreciate it if you guys give me your advise and thoughts on it.

After cleaning it I saw some pitting.

Would you suggest replacing it or would the seals still keep ot sealed?

Please advise.

Replace, seal surface needs to be smooth. An axle saver seal may be available. Need to inspect the entire area for pits. Even 1 pit will cause premature failure. Rust on rest of shaft doesn't really matter.

Yikes! Replace the shaft. I don't have rust here so that looks pretty severe. But once the pitting starts I don't think it will seal for long. I don't know if they make speedy sleeves or not for axles?

They should have speedy sleeves but one of those dual seal axle seals may work if they're available, and if you can get it deep enough to that nicer part. One of those seals that is static on the shaft and the tube but the seals are what are taking the friction.

I would just replace if it were me.

There should not be a seal there? Seal should be on the other end. Or I know nothing instead of very little about a 10 bolt?

That doesn't look like a rear axle shaft to me.. first tell it's not soaked with gear oil, second tell is it's rusty. If that axle shaft is that rusty in a rear axle, you've got a full rebuild comin lol

I also don't believe any rear axle shafts are cut like that.

I did a double take at first as well. Used to be a speedy sleeve for just about anything.

You guys are correct, this is the long shaft of drivers side of a front Corporate10 bolt.

I kind of figured, but just wanted some of y'alls expert input.
The other three looked good.

I guess I will have to call on Mr Ayden @AyWoSch see if he might have a good axle shaft that is not pitted to add to my order of parts.

Thank you again my friends! You will never know how much I appreciate all the motivation you have inspired in me even though I move very, very slow and with so much pain to continue with the old 1984 Chevy K10!!!

That axle surface is not only pitted,that seal contact surface is worn out.Buy you a new axle.You'll be glad you did.I got lucky and found a good used one.A few years later it pitted,but not bad enough yet to replace

Ive run some shafts like what you have before because I've replaced LOTS of these shafts in my scout. If you have a heavy foot off road invest in chromoly shafts as needed. Don't cheap on the U-joints. Had one brand in for a couple years of occasionall wheeling and another for 1 weekend of wheeling and was junk. Spicer brand or precision is good.

Meh.
I'd rub it with some emery cloth real good and run it. I'm no pro but it don't look that bad to me... Hit it with the emery cloth dude. It be fine.

honestly I was thinking naval jelly to remove ALL the rust, smear a thin layer of JB weld in the low spots and THEN the emery cloth, work your way down to really fine so it's basically indistinguishable. It's not like a rod bearing or cylinder head or anything, that'll be good enough to make a sealing surface for an axle. Even if it doesn't last another 40 years, it'll last a lot longer than if you toss it it back in like that, or even more expensive just jump straight to replacing it...

The good news is: Eventually, what used to be an all day repair per side, will easily become a 4 hour job, after your second or third time in there!

That is not some pitting , That is a LOT of pitting, Don't think Your going to be able to keep a seal from leaking on that shaft.
