You can remove them and then apply patches of Velcro (the fuzzy side) to the ends were they pivot. It works well and many of the OE's have done similar on various makes and models.

Well familiar with this plan !!

The Velcro idea is not one I had thought of, but will try to next time !!

For some reason my ‘89 hasn’t had any problems but my ‘84 did. I did the felt pad fix as bucket suggested and the vents were fine the rest of the time I owned it.

I have personally done this and it works well.
Set them back a bit and you won't even notice them. Definitely use the fuzzy side.

I popped mine out and put a black garden hose washer around the pivot pin. O rings might work too.

Buy replacements. The plastic tabs on the ends wear out over the decades.

take small o ring cut and take small screw driver and slide in around the pivot post usually just one end will do it and that way you don't need to take apart works great mine have been in for 15years hope this helps

It's not at all hard to take apart that vent. What are we talking like 12 screws total?. I feel like slicing it and pushing it in there makes for about as good of a fix as the folded paper. Being cut it's really just some floppy rubber wedged in there, at that point an o-ring is a waste of money might as well use part of a rubber band... Plus you could slip with the screwdriver and **** up the vent/dash. The o-ring could work very nicely, but Jesus just spend the extra 3 minutes and do it right.
