Floorboard paint

I'm repairing the floor pans in my pickup but am not planning on painting the truck for a while. I'm curious what you guys suggest to paint the floor with to prevent rust and would wear good in the floor while waiting to paint it. My carpet was toast and I tossed it. I don't plan to buy carpet until after I paint the trick entirely.

My truck is a 2 tone green. What kind of paint and what color would you use?

I'd use Eastwood's Rust Converter and then Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Platinum. Then you can paint it with whatever, whenever.

I've always had great results with Eastwood's products. I don't work for them and they don't send me money.

I've been looking into this alot for my trans am floors, some of it's new metal, over half, some old some with rust.

I wanted to use something like por15 or chassis saver which just goes right over the rust and you have to sand with 80 or so to get it stuck to good paint or bare smooth metal not rusted.

Alot of guy son here told me to use self etch primer, and maybe epoxy or to use epoxy which is a huge debate itself epoxy vs self etch.


I've used some summit rust converters on other parts and reg. spray can over, not sure on how well it'll hold up.

I do know from this that some of the por15 and such you're not supposed to use a converter, before doing their paint, yet the metal etch they sale for theirs is basically phosphoric acid from what I've been told or read LOL

I'm still at a huge loss as to what to do.

I rolled on rustoleum truck bed liner on my k5 floor after i patched a bunch of holes. I just used the cheaper non-pro version as it's a floor and no need for the extra durability with the same rust protection.

I have tried welding up the small holes and I think I am fighting a losing battle. What a pain. I had to stop and start working on something else before I got frustrated and broke something.

If that 1st pic you posted was the majority of what you're dealing with and you don't want to or have access to a sand blaster.... If it were me I'd hit the rusty spts with a wire wheel for a 4" angle grinder to get to bare metal the fastest I picked up the wheel at harbor freight for around $12 I think it was. Then depending how thin it is, lowest setting on a mig welder to spot seam for thickening and reinforcement or just cut out the bad spot and butt weld in a patch. I had a few pinholes in mine that turned into 2" weld globs and lines that looked like rivers from blowing through bad thin metal until I got into good meat. I conveniently had some scrap 16ga sheet metal and a plasma cutter for my fabricating needs. It will definately take time. I've been working on my floor for just about 3 months between life and work. Now that I'm nearly done I'm really glad I put in the effort. Hang in there! And if your luck is like mine once you fix something you'll find something else broke.

This is my life, spot a tiny place and then watch it grow as I try to make it better. I ordered parts the other day just to have something else to do so I can not hate this thing before I can even drive it again. I got to wishing I had never taken it apart in the first place that last time I fooled with it.
