Finally got a running 65 C10

Anyone know what size tap a spark plug hole would take on a small block?

Should be a 14mm; I would think there is a special made tap/thread chaser for that. Do you have a well stocked parts store near you?

Yeah, and I also have a couple hundred piece tap and die set from northern tool so when I get back from lunch, I’ll check that out. Going to Harbor freight right now to get another hydraulic jack from my engine hoist. It quit hoisting and it’s super old, all the O-rings are blown out of it and I’m done with it.

The older heads used a larger spark plug. The change happened in '70 I think.

I would get a back tap/chaser from a local auto parts store over using a cut tap to chase the threads. Especially over a cheaper cut tap. A lot of times they [cheap taps] will cut oversized on the major diameter.

I don’t know for certain on sbc head spark plug holes, but a lot of automotive components have a thread form that has a radius instead of a sharp V profile at the major diameter, this removes the potential stress riser and makes a stronger thread. A tap will cut that radius out and make it a sharp vee. Maybe it would make no difference, but I’d go chaser over cut tap.

Nice looking old 65. Kind of partial to them, as still have the old 65 my grandfather bought new here in the little town I live in. Still got the 230 and 3 on the tree.

Guess the 283 is just not meant to be. I wnt to harbor freight to get a replacement jack for my hoist and boughtr the wrong one. went back, got it, got the drivetrain out, was pressure washing the engine and it fell over, slamming to the pavement. I'm going LS, **** this. I dont have the patience to mess with this old junk anymore anyway. The oil leak was coming from an expansion plug where the oil sending unit shouldve went, btw...and possibly/probably a head gasket as well.

Ive been going throuygh a lot lately, bipolar is getting worse as I age, I'll be 40 this year. Suicidal, depression, terrible anxiety. So yeah I may be giving up too easy

Sucks to hear you have that going on. Definitely makes simple things seem worse than they are.

Not trying to poke the bear here, you bought an old truck with known minor problems, and easy to fix problems. Going LS is just adding modern problems to an old rig.

I guess it will make you all happy to know that as of last night I decided to continue the 283 build since i received all the 400 in parts i bought for it.

Today I went to horrible freight and bought an engine stand, got it mounted with hardware store bolts, removed the intake, pan, replaced the crank seal, and oil pump and pickup tube.

I want to do one of those comp thumpr cams. I need to buy a new oil pan, and a newer intake manifold. The massive oil leak was due to them expansion plugging the old 1" hole on the back by the distributor known as the oil tube hole....I'm not doing that this time.

It sounds like LS was your intention before you bought it. Personally I prefer old rigs to keep their integrity. Does that mean only an engine and transmission available in 1965? No. There are plenty of setups out there that will drop right in that 65.

I will never be a proponent of ls swaps in any old vehicle.

My passion is in 60s series trucks. Should you keep the 283? Not necessarily. Same for the 3 speed. We provided info about other directions to take, you had ls in your sights from the start.

In the end it's your truck.

Saying it like it is, and other's opinions not aligning with your intent, does not make the site bad. We're all the same people, just older and wiser, and some new members. You want to get beat up on a forum, post this same information you shared in this thread over on the Stovebolt forum.

Once i got the engine out i was able to get it to take a plug

Yall act like the LS platform is some space age tech when in reality its at least 26 year old tech that is still mechanical at its core, youd think they were putting tesla batteries in these trucka the way yall talk
