I need a new chuck for my Buffalo drill press it’s either late 40s early 50s model it has Jacobs taper I believe that’s what it’s called the attachment nut broke because some halfwit put the wrong size chuck on and used electrical tape as a spacer. I’m not having any luck finding one kinda miss my drill press and refuse to buy a new **** one

Bummer. Not familiar with the Buffalo hardware myself. I've got a couple of Craftsman presses from the early forties and fifties that were made by King Sealy.

I tracked down the adjustable pulley mechanism for the top after I got it done. I can run it from 300 rpm all the way up to 3750 rpm.

This one is from the early forties. From what I understand, they stopped production in '41 when the war started. It's next up for a reconditioning when I get a chance

Be aware there are multiple Jacobs chuck sizes, they are common in the machining world.

Yes I know I guess Buffalo used a Jacobs taper and according to the dimensions I can’t match one up.:(

There's a fair bit of variance within the sizes, and I haven't been a journeyman in a few years, but they go, JT0, JT1, Jt2, etc etc. Each one representing a size.

If it's a 3/8 chuck, it's probably a JT33 or JT6. There are also adapters to go to more modern tapers like R8 or MT3.

What are the dimensions you have now? I'll get my machinist handbook out and look it up.

You don’t have a start conversation button bottom of taper .4915” top of taper .5710 and total length of taper 1.0655

Interesting, the closest one to that is the JT2 at top: 0.5590 bottom: 0.4876 Length: 0.88

Is it a threaded mount?

The chuck has a snap ring groove which holds the nut on and the nut pullls the chuck onto the taper
