Factory 83-87 stereo question

When I bought my truck I noticed my dash wasn't hacked up. Since I'm not sure what I'm doing for a stereo just yet, I purchased a stock AM/FM radio from a gentleman and it even has the knobs! Anyway, I noticed after I tried installing it that the jam nuts weren't with the stereo. Now what?! I don't know what size or where to get them. I tried Lowe's and Home Depot as well as a local nut and bolt shop. Still no results. Does anyone know where to find them and what size? Any help would be appreciated!

go to the junk yard and find any car or truck from the 70 or 80 and grab the bolts off it

If you go back to the electrical section of Home Depot near the lighting and fan parts area, they sell a package with several sizes of jam nuts that are used to repair lighting fixtures. I would have to compare sizes, but they look like some are the the right size for a radio shaft.

I just grabbed a unit off the shelf and the threads appear to be 7/16"-28 so maybe the electrical section or if the hardware store has conventional nuts maybe split them with a bandsaw.

Bad news. I went to Home Depot and found a bunch of different jam nuts for lamp repair but none of them were 7/16". Ugh! I'll have to keep looking.

Luckily the seller included the original radio with my truck. Unluckily, he didn’t save the nuts so I was in the same boat as you when I went to reinstall it.

Your probably going to burn more than $9 worth of gas driving around looking for them. (Not counting your time.) Is $9 really that big a deal when you need them to get on with your radio installation? Just my opinion.

Haha! True. When I was a kid though, I would’ve driven from here to BFE just to save a buck. For my work, I drive all over the place so I’ll just check an Ace that’s on my way to a job. I think It’s just the idea of spending that much on a tiny piece of metal that I should be able to get for less than a buck. Value vs. worth...
