I would suggest the 4l80E as it is heavier duty - may give you more options going forward on a truck. The 4l60 over here is used on the sedan, and seems a bit undercooked -. Agree with rebuilding yourself, and getting the ATSG book. Also fit a stage I kit while you are at it, and get the full rebuild kit with the bands and everything.
We bought a second hand transmission holder and turned up a sleeve to mount it in an engine stand. The OEM Kent Moore ones are the best if can find one, otherwise there are a number of modern copies. Makes a world of difference compared to working off the floor or trying to balance on a bench. Plus now you can make $ re-building cores for your friends !!
It will be worth it and you only want to do it once ..
