Love Edelbrock carbs on SBCs! Simple enough that even an idiot like me can use one reliably! Granted, my current 350 has a Q-jet on it, but I'm also kind of partial to those.

1988 Jimmy with a mild 383 and AVS2 650. Very happy with how it runs. Took it from Wyoming to Minnesota this past summer and averaged 16.5 mpg trying to keep it at 75 mph. Put a wide band 02 on it after I got back and was able to lean it out a touch and it got me about 1 more mpg. Best I've done is 18.5 on a 120 mile trip at about 70 mph. It has great power with no bogs or hesitations. I also have a 2006 avalanche 2wd with the 5.3 that I had to build a trans for this summer (after it had sat for a few years after my son blew it up towing a couple 4 wheelers in the Bighorn Mountains), so I started using it to pull my band trailer and the first time using the Avalanche I was wondering it I was ever going to get up to 70!

I also worked a bit on the Jimmy's timing curve. I think that really helped. Anyhow. I really like the AVS2 for driveability and simplicity and do not miss the q-jet I had on it that was built by a very reputable builder.

I've run a 1406 on an Edelbrock manifold for 17 years on my 350 (1984 K20). Manual choke. Starts easy and runs strong. No complaints.

I have run, rebuilt, and bought & sold several Edelbrock 1404, 1405, and 1406 carbs over the years. But I never have bought a complete tuning kit, just a few pairs of metering rods, springs, and jets, along with pieces and parts from a couple rebuild kits. I have seen more than a few 14- series carbs that work pretty well with the "stock" jets, rods, and springs. Also have to say the gaskets are first rate, and rarely need replacing.

What I've heard, even from Holley proponents, is the AVS2 with its annual boosters is a great carb, and in many cases won't need any adjustments other than idle mixture, idle speed, and maybe seasonal choke adjustments. Like the 14-series, what it probably doesn't like is big cams that make low manifold vacuum. The 1916 off-road version has a spring-loaded needle & seat.

No reason at all to get a older generation 1406 when the 1906 AVS2 is only $16 more at Summit Racing. I can't see spending another $90 or so for the 1916, unless you do a lot of rough off-roading.

Not saying Edlebrock carbs are bad. Have installed many with success. I do wonder how many are checked with a 02 meter or infrared? Slightly rich carbs will usually run just fine, lean not so much.

I get a kick out a nice vehicle at a stop light and I can smell the CO [rich]. Guess as long as it runs. Never mind could run much better for very little labor.

Will still say most I installed need some sort of trim change.
